Hunting is fine
In response to Charlie Ogar's letter, ("Photos disturbing," Jan. 6) I would like to thank the State Journal for promoting hunting. Growing up in the Upper Peninsula in a family of hunters, I learned nothing about killing or violence. I learned everything, however, about respect for nature, for people, for animals and, most important, for firearms.
People who oppose hunting tend not to understand it. My family owns and raises "bear hounds." I often encounter people who think of "the poor defenseless bear." Have you ever seen what a 300-pound bear can do to a 70-pound dog? It isn't pretty.
Bears in Michigan have no natural predators and often make nuisances of themselves, getting into garbage and helping themselves to anything available. Deer are almost the same. Their biggest predator is traffic. And that, my friends, is a waste.
