I have been growing wild apple trees that i started from seed in the winter. There are about ten of them a foot or so tall in two gallon pots. Over the past month or so i have noticed a white powdery substance that i assume is powdery mildew. Has anyone experienced this with their apple trees? is it powdery mildew? and any pointers on how to get rid of it? thanks in advance for the help.

Powdery Mildew will kill young trees if left unchecked. It will overwinter in the bud scale and start to growing with the first green shoots in the spring.

You can kill it but you won't see the established mildew go away. The new growth will out grow the infection if treated promptly.

Several chemicals control this disease. Try Rally or Topsin M or Rubigan. These are all trade names that you can buy at any retail Ag outlet. Rates per gallon are on the label.

You will need a couple applications this season to get it under control. Make sure you make 2 or three applications next spring when the new growth gets started.

Looks like you've got a couple things going on.

The bigger the pot the better, they'll do better if you line them out in the soil. Just treat them like nursery stock and dig them just before you are ready to plant them.

You can over fertilize and over water them too easily in pots and get burn like you see in the pics. Powdery Mildew will leave newly formed leaves burned like you see in the pics. That is probably what you have going on. Get some form of mildecide and spray them on a weekly basis. You'll see them grow out of it.

I've got a few trees I planted this spring that I didn't get to for a few weeks and they looked pretty bad a/c mildew. A couple sprays and they grew right out of it. A little liquid fertilizer along with the spray helps too.

Thanks AgMan! I just went and bought some spray it says it controls powdery mildew it has Clarified hydrophobic extract of neem oil. Will that help? I also bought some spray for my roses that controls insects and disease, it has Acephate, Resmethrin and Triforine. Would this be better for my apple trees than the neem oil?
I did buy some triple 10 liquid fert. because I think the miracle grow soil has lost its nutrients.

This is my first time trying this and it is pretty cool! I'm learning. :help:

The ingrediants you listed are all insecticides. They will keep the insects off and that will help. Does it list any type of fungicide?

Most of those mixes will work to control bugs and diseases and save you buying a 10 lb bag that will last for years.

I checked my trees this afternoon and they are putting on lots of new growth. All that rain and warm weather have helped.

Don't apply any ground fertilizer after the 1st of july. You will want them to harden off when the cool weather comes. The 10-10-10 foliar will be okay.

Good luck.

Give them a try. Most of those premixes have enough different things in them that something will work. I know that Meijer and Fruitbasket Flowerland over here have a mix for fruit trees that covers everything. That sounds like what you have.

Just follow the directions on the container and you should be good.
