Steelhead Vs. Lake Trout--which one has more fight to it?

  • Steelhead! Lake Trout have as much fight as an old boot on the river bottom.

  • Lake Trout fight harder! Can't say anything bad about steelhead, just Lake Trout!

  • Don't Know! I'm afraid of real fish, so I chase stream trout instead.

I like catching lakers in the river along with LRB's, not because of the fight, but because they are typically the odd fish for the day. Any laker I've faught on the Grand IMO fights like a hen king being pulled off gravel, doesn't want to move and you slowly just drag it in. LRB's somewhere in between laker and steelhead.

Seanympho, does this one look sick and lean to you? How about the chrome look you speak of?

Nice looking fish, really. More similar in shape to the ones I catch, not quite quite as tall in the midsection, but closer than the river run pic. Still more chromed than the ones I catch. Nice catch! I haven't hooked one in a river yet, but I used to catch quite a few from the pier in Ludington in the early '90's.

I have a few pics in my gallery of these 'torpedoes'. They have dark backs when caught. They lighten-up some as they ride in the livewell all day and are fairly chromed by the time they get the knife.

Have you ever hooked a steelhead that was in good shape? In good shape I mean a lake fish or a summer/fall river steelhead. It's all in good fun, your entitled to your opinion just like everyone else.
Is this healthy enough? :evilsmile

I really do not know what to think! What would you think if you looked at the poll results?
I think the poll suggests our river-run lakers fight like old tires! And one might have to drive 900 miles and find the 1 week a year when the laker 'torpedoes' can be caught shallow. And THAT'S getting more expensive every year!:( I totally agree about lakers bottom-hugging, I gues that's good for deep fish ab=nd bad for shallow ones, no place to go! Up north they FREAK when you pull 'em up! Thats the fun part!

And I know what a sheephead is!:rant::lol:

It is probable cause that humans give a better fight over the steelhead, then the steelhead themselves.
 :bash:

I don't know was it healthy? How did it fight? That looks like a decent fish and by the look on your face you probably just got beat up by it. I have hooked a decent amount of fall bucks that size out of the PM and every one has fought like a mad dog. I will say that the largest steelhead that I have landed on the PM was caught in 32-34deg water and it did not fight half as good as it would have in warmer water, but that is common sense.

For sake of argument, you could also drive or fly out west and catch some real steelhead fresh from the ocean. See what one of those 20+lb sea liced chromers do to a 20lb Canadian shield lake trout.

What size lake trout are you talking about, it would be nice to see some pics to get a better idea of what you are talking about?

Enough debating for me on a pointless subject. Bring on the spring kings now!:)

Hey I remember that picture. I think I may have even netted that laker. Fought like crap, and that was in 50 degree water too.

BTW, looks like the lakers are winning in the polls now:confused:
Yeah that was that laker that you netted John. It took forever to pull up, it felt like I was pulling up dead weight. I can't wait for some more of those summer days.

Spring browns fight great sometimes, I've seen them ripping line on people before. Steelhead fight much harder then lakers or browns, by far. My wife hooked and landed 3 lakers at Foote dam a few years ago while steelheading and had absolutely NO problem with them. The one steelhead she got into that day was another story:D!

I'll put a 25 inch stream brown up against a 25" steelhead any time, any day. Actually I think stream or river browns out fight any rainbow or steelhead the same size.

I have caught steelhead both spring and fall that put up very little fight but over all they out fight lake trout. You can not compare a lake run spawing brown trout with those that live in the river year. If you do, I question your experience.

Yeah, it was plenty healthy, fought like a demon, and it's too funny that you can tell I fell flat on my face jumping out of the boat to fight it!

These are average lakers where I go, I think the largest I've landed pushed 16#. All in all, very comparable in size to MI steelhead, #/#. Other guys up there w/ serious deep water gear haul in fish surpassing 40#:yikes: about every summer. I try to find 'em early and catch 'em shallow.

I voted for Lake Trout cause I sure wouldn't know what the heck a Steelhead fights like after fishing in TC's boat all day Sunday.

"out of shake and bake and still no Steel"
I'm sorry, you must've been under the impression that our goal was to catch fish yesterday. I should've told you in advance that I wanted to set the record for the most re-spots in one day.

Hey Sea Nympho looks like the lakers are winning hands down. I guess the only thing I can do is admit Lakers are better than Steel. Or maybe I should wait for MS super delegates to pull thru the vote! Tightlines!

Hopefully this will take some of the people off from the rivers and put them on the lakefront for some cnr laker fishing.:tdo12:
