Not to knock that, but one of the coolest bird dogs I’ve watched work is a pound rescue lab x ??? with a weird coat and weird fur and a weird tail and he’s a freaking machine. Dude thinks nothing of shooting birds over cat tails as they he dog will get them, and he does…

Great post and it brings back fond bird dog memories. It's 1959 and I'm a broke High School freshman but introduced to pheasant hunting by a couple of buddies, managed to get a 16 ga. S x S and wants "my" bird dog more than anything else . My ol' man is more interested in thoroughbred ponies at Hazel Park than pedigreed dogs and the idea of spending hard earned $$$ on a papered dog . . . ???

So we go down to the Detroit Dog Pound and there's a mature dog that looks like a Springer Spaniel complete with a docked tail but a very tight coat and a lot of what I came to know as "ticking" on her legs . Dad and I go home with "Sadie" and about $12.00 poorer.

I'll say this, after sneaking and crawling under a dip in a cyclone fence off the MNG runways at Detroit Metro , if Sadie got on a rooster, that bird would sooner rather than later be in the air . She once actually pointed a covey of quail and once howled and whined and brought a rabbit around for me but she seemed born to , again, getting running roosters in the air. My buddies and I killed a lot of roosters over Sadie both in the Thumb and off the not much used MNG runways :hide: at Detroit Metro. Thanks again.

My guess is that is a curly coated retriever. They look like a cross breed, but my do they retrieve!

Back to the topic, I’ve always been intrigued by a pointing lab, curious about prey drive and ambition to find ducks. Worth investigating

They are 100% pure bred Labrador retrievers and they retrieve and pass hunt tests with the best of em. Some of the Top producing HRC studs in the country are Pointing Labs. Think we had 3 or 4 in the top 10 at one point this year. Drive is not an issue with my dogs. They live to work
