Plots for Nov. 15

We are just South of Hermansville in the Mid UP and in the no baiting core zone. With No baiting in effect we are looking for suggestions on any plot planting crop that has worked for you late into the Fall. Most of our plots are in clover or trefoil which is pretty much gone by Nov. 15. We have a heavy deer population and they eat anything we grow. Our main problem is getting something to be available in Nov. now that we cannot bait. Any suggestions appreciated.

I am not far from Hermansville. I normally plant brassicas by mid-July at the latest to get some good growth before cold weather sets in. I planted July 9th last year. Recovering from surgery this year so I didn't plant any straight brassica plots but did include some in my fall blends even though I know they won't amount to much.

Probably the best you can do for this year will be cereal grains.

Wheat and Rye! Plant heavy 200 to 300 pounds per acre. Get them in ground... Too late for turnips in your area. I planted 10 acres last Thursday near Felch... Added Clover for next year.
What is the main difference between Wheat and Rye. In our area with early frosts I always thought wheat was more likely to brown than rye which stays green much longer??

What does 200 to 300 pounds look like in the spring?. I've ever only done 150 max per acre
I used 50 pounds of WW and 150 pounds of rye. Also added clover for next year. Approximately 2 dozen doves in each plot after planting. Dragged and packed after planting. Figured at least 20% eaten before germination. If I was only planting for Novemeber 15 gun season, prefer very thick and clover will have little value this year. Would increase my rye and use 50 pounds of WW. 150 pounds of rye would probably be good. Just noticed the heavy dove concentration last week..

Maybe I am taking this out of context Ohio UP Hunter?.....but it isn't a good idea to drag small seed like clovers, switchgrass or brassicas, etc, after seeding. You will get far better germination and coverage by cultipacking first - then spreading the seed - and then cultipacking again. Or just seeding prior to a rain event and allowing the rain to "set" the seed.

Maybe that is what you did but I just wanted to clarify this for newer food plotters.

Fertilized, roto tilled, spread WW and Rye, dragged, Cultipacked, spread Whitetail Institute Clover in 8 1/2 acres. Alpha Rack in another 1 1/2 acres, Culti packed again. Plant 15 acres on UP property. 30 acres on Rose City property and 25 acres on Ohio Property.
Original post Plots for November 15. August 22 today. Cereal grain...... Gentlemen asked what 200 to 300 pounds looks like. Thought I only replied to him. Looking forward to hunting season, September 1..
