I don't know how this will translate to non-resident opportunities. But seeing these bears make it off of "the list". Is another bright spot on our conservation record. Maybe they'll include them in their Super Tag drawing?

CHEYENNE - Fulfilling a promise made in September, Governor Mark Gordon has officially petitioned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to remove the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) population of grizzly bears from the Endangered Species List. The petition, filed with the support of Idaho and Montana, affirms that grizzly bears, by all measures, have been fully recovered since 2003.

“This is an extraordinary and monumental success story for species recovery and should be celebrated,” Governor Mark Gordon said. “The GYE grizzly bear is ready to join the ranks of the bald eagle, American alligator, peregrine falcon and brown pelican as receiving proper recognition as a thriving, recovered and stable species.”

The proposed hunt was back in 2018. On a whim I got in touch with a hunting consultant and asked what he knew, in case I won the lottery and wanted to be in on the first legal hunt in decades. The below is the response I received on May 30, 2018, obviously dated but still interesting.

"I do have a good outfitter that could take you but here’s the status report that I just got from my friend Jim Zumbo.

Keith, I just called our G&F office and they said there is nothing yet on their website about grizzly hunting. You can google WYOMING WILDLIFE COMMISSION APPROVES GRIZZLY BEAR HUNT and find a bunch of links that have info.

However, and very important, the antis have already set up a court date on the hunt with a federal judge in Missoula in August. Many people, including me, believe they will win and this hunt will never see the light of day. Antis are well organized, including HSUS and Sierra Club and many others.

I do know this. There will be 24 tags, six of them for nonresidents, and available in a lottery draw. There are very specific restrictions if a sow is killed. Cost is $600 for residents, $6,000 for nonresidents. As I understand it, if you’re drawn, you will be contacted by G&F and they will explain the hunt details. If you agree, you will be given a 10-day hunt season in a specific area.

As I said, I don’t believe this hunt will happen. I expect the antis have found a judge in Montana sympathetic to their cause. Sorry I don’t have more info. I’ll let you know when G&F puts out official news which should be soon."
