Opinions on the right power rod for bead fishing

434 Views 6 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  adam bomb
I have been bead fishing with an 11'8" 6-15 rod and I seem to be losing a lot of fish on beads. Could this rod possibly be too stiff to effectively fish beads? What are others having success on rod wise?

I think a softer rod is better for any type of drift fishing, be it bobber or bouncing lead along the bottom.

My favorite is an older Scott 11'-9" 6 weight spey rod that was custom built by Michigan Streamside.

That rod has landed plenty of fish using 4# to 6# leaders.
I like a 9 wt 9ft fly rod blank tied for spin fishing.
Yes. I have found with too stiff of a rod I pull a lot of hooks. Lami 12’ 6-12 for example does not work for me, however the softer 13’ 6-10 works great, as does the g1000 10’6 6-10. I do “ape handle” my fish often as my one buddy puts it.

I think I know which 11’8 6-15 rated rod you are fishing. I won’t name/bash the brand. But, a buddy has a rod with those identical specs, and holding it, I can say it is a very stiff rod in my opinion. I have watched him pull hooks on countless bead fish on that rod.

Id say options are go for a softer rod, or ease up a lot on the pressure when using that rod.

6-15 is a pretty heavy rod for Steelhead. I've found that I pull hooks from a lot of Steelhead if I use rods that are too beefy. I land a LOT more on my 9 1/2 foot 8 weight, than I do on my wife's 9 1/2 foot 9 weight.

I run a 6-17 lb 13'ish blank that's a mod fast action. I'm not sure that I'd actually run 17 lb leader on it though.

That being said it's got a light tip but some serious backbone to drive hooks home or turn fish.

What size hook are you using with what size bead? If you’re using too small a hook that could be your issue
