The final consent decree is being held up because the Soo tribe wants out. They don’t want to be restricted to an area, technique, or quota.

I estimate more of the fishery will be given away (Saginaw Bay and the Detroit River) and the Soo tribe will be brought into the fold.

I’d say Spring 2023 we will see gill nets from Grand Haven to Tawas.

Writing isn’t final yet but I assure you fishing techniques have already been adjusted! Yes, Saginaw bay has a big bullseye on it now! Stay tuned!

I don’t understand why anyone is surprised, we literally have nothing to offer the tribes in exchange for anything.

Correct. However, the State/USFWS could have emplaced enforcement measures such as DNA Testing on netters, GPS transponders on all boats, nets and shipping crates, rotating regulators at every port/facility that daily catch weights could be recorded and bounced against a magical 50% biomass number.

Zero enforcement means a free for all. The entire consent decree is just words on paper without any enforcement.

So the tribes are legally allowed to gill net any species of fish that swims in Lake michigan?

Yes, the nets do not pick one species over another. All species are vulnerable.

I guess that the State of MI is doing better than I thought!!! I mean, to give up an 8 billion dollar a year sportfishing revenue... Why even buy a fishing license now...

It is hard to get any help from fishermen. We have a gathering of fishing clubs and conservation organizations that have been fighting this for years.

The DNR’s goal is to make sure the process is the punishment. They have dragged this out for 3 years now in hopes of bankrupting any opposition.

The Coalition to Protect Michigan Resources (CPMR) is the umbrella and was an Amicus Curiae in Federal Court. But, once the CPMR lawyers figured out the State was in bed with the Feds and the Tribes and were giving away the great lakes, it resulted in a yelling match, and the CPMR lawyers have been getting nothing from the state except stink eye.

The fight goes on. Objection Motions have been filed and unbelievably the judge said all objections will be adjudicated before the new nets become official.

The current decree was OK. If we could have just held on to a the current 50/50 split, everyone would have gone on their way…but no.

Same as energy policies, boarder protection etc. They could have just left them alone and we would have been fine…but no.

Would the tribes have accepted that? I think not. More likely the States goal was to not let this turn into a virtual race war while we sport fisherman were getting a clue. In order to negotiate we have to have something to barter with. Basically we’re out of money. Lol, probably because we donate so much at the casinos…

i wish it was different. But that ship has sailed.
Thank you state of Michigan. Might be time to start looking for another job.🤬🤬🤬

“Per the court order released Friday, the presiding judge, Paul L. Maloney, agreed with the GTB proposals and ordered that these proposals will become part of the successor consent decree when it is finalized. “

This is probably the most frustrating part for me. Why even have negotiations if the judge is just going to agree with every single proposal from the tribes.

It’s just about politics and none of it is driven by scientific data which flies in the face of the model of conservation. Such an ass backwards and ** stupid way to go about things.

The state wants to avoid conflict with an 8 billion dollar a year industry but that’s exactly what they are going to get.

I wish we could get every Michigan sport fisherman to not buy a license. A couple years of No revenue and something might happen.

Cutting nets, sinking net boats, boycotting casinos or licenses will do nothing but maybe land you in jail. I believe we can fight this legally.

If you do not want to see more gill netting of our fish, please consider signing the petition.... asap!

If you want to donate to help fund the legal fight to protect our fisheries, please consider the Coalition to Protect Michigan Fisheries.

Coalition to Protect MI Resources

Over a million MI fishing licenses are sold each year. I bet most of us hate seeing nets - especially unlighted gill nets. Yet only a tiny fraction of us speak up. If half of us actually do something, we could change this mess. It got this far because people like me thought others would protect our resources - so I just went fishing! Not anymore.

To be clear, some netting imo is reasonable and necessary. We need them so we can eat fish in restaurants and for people who don't fish. Tribal subsistence netting seems reasonable to me. My problem is with whimsically regulated unmonitored netting (especially 'for profit' operations) that could wipe out a fishery and specifically with gill nets. Personally, I also want tiny solar LED lights on all buoys.

It is time to fight the tribes, the DNR, the Feds and anybody else who thinks it is OK to let people, native or not, rape our fisheries. We need reasonable regulations with enforcement! PLEASE ACT on your beliefs!

The MDNR needs a firehosed sized enema from the top down to start with.
