Natural Resources Commission Meeting in Lansing on June 7

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission will meet on Thursday, June 7, at the Lansing Center, located at 333 E. Michigan Ave. in Lansing.

Three NRC policy committees will meet prior to the Committee of the Whole meeting. The Policy Committee on Land Management will meet at 10 a.m. in Room 202 to review Pigeon River Country State Forest concept of management, Phase II recommendations for the Department of Natural Resources’ Land Consolidation Strategy for 11 counties, and to review a proposal for a fee for 1,320-foot variance requests from oil and gas exploration companies.

The Policy Committee on Finance and Administration will meet at 12 p.m. in Room 202. The committee will be updated on the 2007 and 2008 state budget, the game and fish license legislation, and review five different restricted funds administered by the DNR: the Forest Development Fund, the Forest Recreation Fund, the Snowmobile Trail Improvement Fund, the Off-Road Vehicle Trail Improvement Fund and the Recreation Improvement Fund.

At 1 p.m., the Policy Committee on Wildlife and Fisheries will meet in Room 202. The committee will review a fisheries order related to viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS); consider wildlife regulation orders for waterfowl, deer and elk; and receive a report on the 2006 deer season harvest.

The Committee of the Whole will meet at 3 p.m. in Room 201, with public appearances starting at 4:30 p.m.

During the business portion of the meeting, the NRC will take action on a wildlife conservation order to open and close deer management units for antlerless licenses and a wildlife conservation order making changes to furbearer regulations.

DNR Director Rebecca Humphries also will decide on a proposal to establish a fee for 1,320-foot variance requests from oil and gas exploration companies, report on an oil and gas auction that took place in May, and consider the VHS fish disease control order. Several land transactions also will be reviewed.
