Not so scientifc crowd experiment...

Not based on science, but for those that don't think specific river reports effect a river.

For the last 3 months I've been driving over the same river by my house on a daily basis. Over that time, I had not seen one vehicle parked at the access I drive by. I think it was last Wed. evening after driving by and seeing no one there, I went home grabbed my stuff and hit the river. The spot I fished can be easily seen from the road and quite a few cars passed while I was fishing and total about 10 cars passed while I was fighting fish. Next day I drove by at the same time and there were 4 cars at the access.

Like I said, not very scientific, but I think there are quite a few people that don't fish unless they think it is "worth it", so if they see you fighting a fish, or see someone else fishing as they drive by, or see a report on the internet they immediatly think "Run's On!" and start fishing.

Maybe no cars at this access for 3 months and then 4 the day after I fished, was just a coincidence though:rolleyes:

Thanks for the report! I'm planning on hitting that spot when I get out of work today. Glad to hear there's finally some fish there!

"That's what I'm talkin' about!"

:p :D
love em, or hate em, i'm afraid the forum board/reports are here to stay. i enjoy browsing them tremendously, but it would be hard to argue the fact that they can funnel enormous pressure into specific areas.

unfortunatly small areas can't absorb it the way the larger ones do. SG
Some tips to help you out with your problem:

Try to wear more camo, park a mile or more from the access, cut off a hooked fish if a car goes by, so no one sees it. Maybe a false report will keep the masses from coming back. The things we have to put up with as fishermen. Imagine someone else wanting to fish, what a tragedy.

I never trust or follow a second hand report anyway, but if I notice a spot is fishable after being locked up for a long winter, I too may plan to make a trip down. Especially after a BIG rain event and the water is starting to come down and clear. It's not rocket science. See you on the river.

As a rule of thumb the easiest/best opportunity access areas for fishing or hunting will have the most pressure as people for the most part are lazy. Sure seeing someone slaying them, word of mouth, and reports will increase pressure. Stay away from these spots when the crowds show up, if you can't get along and want the place to yourself.

BTW sounds like there will be 5 cars down there tonight. Right Steve? Thats what I'm talking about.

I'm looking in my crystal ball and it shows big crowds showing up on the rivers over the next few weeks. Like it or not.

People expect everything handed to them. Where can I find fish in the Zipperlip? Where are the best holes? How do I rig to get 'em?

What ever happened to going out there and learning the river yourself, the way most of us had to? People suffer from some inherent laziness and have this aversion to putting in their time -- paying their dues in a way. Fishing is a hobby, and you don't learn everything all at once. It takes practice.

There will always be newbies with questions, but there's no need to give up the goods to everyone just to sound like an expert or to inflate one's ego on an Internet site.

I've said it before: the things and places you learn for yourself mean more than something that is just handed to you. There's a sense of accomplishment. Now that doesn't mean that I won't fish the places my buddies have shown me, but there is something to knowing that you figured something out for yourself.

I agree with Caddis. People post specifics on the web and then wonder why there was a crowd there next time. Gee...that's a tough one.

By the way, I could have broken him off for ya, Caddis! Say the word next time. ;)

I hit four fish in a Grand River drainage ditch yesterday. The only tracks I saw were mink, **** and deer. Sure wish I hadnt left my truck by the road cause I bet its a zoo today!!!! Riverman
The problem is most guys posting specifics don't care if its crowded. Or they think the only ones ready their post are the names they see. A member on this site that is for posting river names fished within 20 feet of me on a large, uncrowded stretch of river. I had to wait for him to pull his line out before casting when there was empty productive spots a hundred yards either way of me. And this was in early feburary. I might have expected it in march or april when the river is crowded.

Steve, you may have problems hooking fish there because you are not as adept a bobber fisherman as myself:D Heck, that made me laugh, just typing it.
Hmmm, guess I better quit fishing by roads.
It seems like, no matter what, guys start sniffing around and calling more about steelhead reports around late Feb and the calls and customers steadily increase with the first 2 weeks of April usually being the busiest. With salmon, guys start calling by July 1 and it steadily gets busier and more calls with Sept 15-Oct 7 being the busiest. The increase in traffic is exactly the same for people that claim they have no internet access to look at our reports on line. I think warmer weather, longer days, snow melt and rain are what gets people thinking steel. IMHO

You hit it right on the head Phlyphisher! I have a few of those spots for all different types of fishing and would never post about them.

I would just hope that everyone uses discretion when posting. I know, I know, it's been said a gazillion times, but leave the mentions for 6th st., Allegan, etc. and leave the obscure spots obscure for your own (If nobody elses) solitude. And leave the little rivers out completely. That is a rule here isn't it?

thanks for the info guys. Can I get some GSP numbers, barrow $20.00 for gas and get you to cover work for me? This is why I don't post fishing reports. Dave PS Joe anything on the spring CARE program?
Flannelfish...
Witness!
And, it's funny that you should ask about CARE. I just e-mailed CO Converse today about the spring program. I'll let you know if I hear anything.

Thousandcasts was really adept at casting bobbers into trees today, even though he did land more than I did. I went for quality over quantity.

Is that vague enough for my own standards? Now...let me think. Studious readers will already know that the secret spot is by a road. Caddis said that it's a bobber place. I've now revealed that there are trees. That's about as specific as you'll get from me. :D

Welcome to the site MayFly1. Do you use the same name on TSS? Riverman
Yes, that is I! Hope I have not offended anyone, I am just expressing some of my frustration that I have experienced and I will not go into any more detail for now!

Thanks for the welcome!
I have not been a member of the MI Sportsman forums very long. Apparently I was mistaken . I thought was a group of Sportsmen with similar interests discussing Hunting and fishing and helping each other out with questions we didn’t understand ,
I live a couple of miles from the Dam in Hesperia, I don’t very often fish near the dam because of the amount of people who do fish there. I fish several miles downstream. Until I read this thread I didn’t realize that if someone who lives a few hours drive asks about the water conditions and I post what they seem to be that I have committed a sin by helping someone out. I never realized that if people didn’t read the reports here that they would never know that Steelhead run up the rivers that go in to Lake Michigan every spring when the water starts to warm up to about 42 degrees. Have broken the sportsman’s code by helping a fellow fisherman out?
I don’t claim to be an expert Steelhead fisherman , (but I am a legend in my own mind ice fishing Bluegills) and I always have and will continue to share the knowledge with anyone that wants to know as far a rigging ,bait & ect. So they can enjoy the sport that God and Mother nature has provided for all of us.
If you don’t want people to know you are catching fish , on what you conceder your private river., park your vehicle and get off your lazy butt and walk in to where you are fishing so no one will see you.

BG Bob... I have to agree. And there is a problem here? I'm confused. What did you expect with cabin fever running rampant?

Here is what I have learned over the past 25yrs visiting this stream. For one this stream is extremely over hyped and with-in 2hrs driving range of (5) million people. The posting of conditions and locations has created more of a commercial enterprise at the expense of the natural resource. This is causing harm to the overall fishing quality and experience, taken for granted 25yrs ago.

Back then, you would try different rivers and locations using different techniques, all the while learning from your friends, family and the like. However today everything is instantaneous and pushes the excessive extreme. The experience is eroding as fast as the technology can produce easy knowledge or in some cases misinformation. Along with the commercial exploitation, they will be no stopping the negative down side. Now day’s commercial postings and the like is putting everyone on the same spot and river with or without any knowledge or care for the natural resource.

Overall, whatever we do we should make sure that we respect this great resource and try to make it better for all.

Why, no, it is not. You can post about any little river you want. Isn't that a nice system?
