I'm not a huge fan of mdnr but this is the right thing to do, it's a positive progressive move and I support it 100%. Don't need to hear about how it's gonna impact other data collection - check in stations & mail survey - just report your deer this way and shut up simple as that. Sure there will be people who kill deer and don't report just like there's always been people who kill deer and don't tag them, at least now law abiding NORMAL people will have the kills accounted for. If participation is at a high level with this someday we & the DNR will have great information on what's actually happening during our deer seasons. For example my buddies and I have killed hundreds of deer in our combined hunting careers and never had a DNR check a deer or a tag. The DNR has no idea about any of these kills, at least now when we report these kills they will be recorded and I see nothing wrong with that. IMO there's no reason not to.
I don’t think the DNR biologists actually support it. The NRC finally gave in after a few decades of being hounded. I don’t think it’s necessary. That data will not likely result in any changes to management. There’s tons of deer, go shoot some. Reporting every one is just an unnecessary burden.

This is Just Too Funny, last year I went to a "Check Station" and they Would Not Take My Details just the County! Nothing More! If you read the statement From Mr Stewart it is nothing but misinformation the reason why No One Responds to their Surveys is Who Get's One? I have been hunting here in my Home State for 40 Plus Years and I have Only Got 2 and that was year back in the 1980's nothing Since! So Sure the Data is Flawed now if they Want Better Info and Data they talk about Lets send 75% of all Deer Hunters a Mailed Out Survey or even 100%. I have seen this too many times when years back they wanted To Test for TB when It was the Hot Topic the DNR Hunting Guide Stated you can take a Head to "ANY" Check Station and they would Accept the Head.for Testing, Wrong I did 2 years in a Row and I was advised I needed to "Dispose" of the Head because We Do Not Take Them So which is IT? If They Want Data for what another "Estimate" They have No Idea how many Deer are in Michigan They Guess Each Year. The DNR Biologists are a Lost Career they Do Not Accept what they Give to the DNR Management. And why some leave because they tell them details and Yet They Are left out of the Details when they DO Decide to make any Change! If you have Followed the DNR for 20 or More Years You would seen this but Few have. I gave up when Mr Clute was the Big Game Specialist he like others talk for the DNR but Give Nothing as to Reason why they Make these Kinds of Changes. It is Sad, Will see How many Do Not Report their Kill. And Now that more know that If You use a "Processor" or a "Taxidermist" they have to Report the details more won't use them and that might hurt their business. Time will Tell though as most are not up on this and many don't Follow the Changes till they Buy a License. As This has been mention; what about those that do their own Processing? If Data Was So Important why have they Limited Hours at "Check Stations", years back Check Stations were open for several days like the one on 131 near BR, now maybe 2 or 3 days depending on where Nov 15 falls! As for Online I have No Internet or Cell Signal that would mean I would have To Leave and Go to where that there is Signal. I have not had Signal but Spotty and now with the "LTE" It is even Less! (Verizon) and You can't go by their "Coverage" Map because It Suggests there is "Signal the Only place I might have any is on top of a Hill at my Property but ! And when I Hunt I never Leave there Till I am Heading Home and that could be 3 to 5 days! So I might be in Violation for Not meeting the Required Time Period. S o have To Be Inconvenienced on my time off to report. Sad. And How Many Hunters will stop Hunting due to this Reg? As we continue to lose Hunters this will be another Reason why we might have fewer. I know 2 so far that won't be hunting due to this. And so might Others. Sure most here will but most here aren't the Large Numbers of Deer Hunters in the state this is just Small fraction of Hunters.

The damn check stations around me were rarely open in the evenings and weekends even during gun season...............which is when most deer are killed. Tried checking some in several times and only once were they actually open...........and then there was one young girl doing all the work while three guys in uniforms stood around drinking coffee doing nothing. Sounds like another load of bs from the DNR to me. They don't give a rip.
No biggie to me ,I never get anything anyways.
Lose your phone on the way to spending 2 nights away from home hunting alone sleeping in your truck after killing a deer the first morning... and you will get something now!

There was one at Rainbow Lodge mouth of the Two-Hearted, from this picture last winter looks like it was replaced with just a phone on a pole after the fire.

I honestly don't care about how people manage large parcels of private land.
What I'd like see is better statistics from our public lands that might result in better management practices, like the realization that a 800 acre SGA in a heavily populated Southern Michigan county probably shouldn't have Infinity doe tags available and a one month long gun season (when you consider our neighboring states have gun seasons that take place over a weekend or two).
If our DNR actually intends to use this data in a way that will lead to regulation changes then I can see this being worth it but if they're going to continue with the "if it's brown it's down" management philosophy that has guided this state and it's recent past then I don't understand the point of burdening people with additional responsibility.

We used to call home from a pay phone in Curran. Now we climb a tree, hold a stick and hope we get enough signal for a text to go through. This could sorta suck but only forces me to drive to a decent cell signal. A real pain but doable.

I don't trust the motive behind making it mandatory. They could have done more to encourage voluntary reporting, like a $3 credit towards next years license purchase. If they really needed more data, as they claim.
I agree, to hell with large parcels. My concern is the areas of private with a bunch of tiny parcels 5,10,15,20 acres etc. Regardless of info the answer will always be more deer tags for everyone,
