I just read where it passed in the Senate. $150 fine max and not a crime. Civil infraction. Has to go through the house and Whitmer still.

Whitmer was ready to sign a similar bill last summer but for political reasons, some POS killed the billed.
Civil infraction and $150 seem fair to me. People who poach still won't register their deer, just like last fall.

LOL they still won't if the bill passes. Most poaching is done without buying a license???? So what's the big deal? If the honest hunter who buys the license will automatically call it in if he is successful, I don't understand all this drama over a new regulation that is extremely helpful in harvest numbers and quickly not an estimate. Dang some of this seems like beating a dead horse. No logic in it, basically if you don't want to register your harvest, don't hunt, it's pretty simple to me.

Crap I would rather have baiting and feeding introduced then change whether it's a crime not to call it in. Just call it in dang. Sorry but I'm shaken my head trying to understand these threads and posts. I don't mean no disrespect I just don't see it as a big deal. Or a deterrent to go hunting.

Yup, now we know exactly how many deer were killed instead of some wild guess counting deer in the back of trucks. Hunting should be 1000 percent better next year with that information alone.

She didn't sign the bill last year, it had passed all the way to her.

Because they added a bunch of stuff to the bill that was unrelated and unnecessary. She said she had no issue with the initial bill.

I cant disagree with making it a civil infraction. However I dont get what all the heartache over this is. It is still A $500 max fine and a misdemeanor for the vast majority of hunting violations. I dont see the immediate need to make this different. Not wearing hunters orange falls in that category.

The article did say, " Data from last year’s hunt is already being used to craft better regulations for the 2023 season."
They also stated that, "The new system also offers really cool data."

We'll see if the regulations are better this year due to the new data. I predict a big, fat negative on that one.

What they did was send her a bill to remove the ability of the NRC to do any deer registration. Not even close to the original law. Here is a summary: "House Bill 6354 would amend the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act (NREPA) to prohibit the Natural Resources Commission from issuing an order or interim order requiring a hunter to report the harvest of deer or to retain a harvest confirmation number for that deer. However, this prohibition would not apply to deer damage shooting permits or disease control permits."

No it isn't, lol. What are they going to do, remove the universal antlerless tag? Nothing significant is going to change.

No it doesn't, lol. We have no idea how many deer were killed or what the ratios are, lmfao.

Correct. First we would have to define what "better" is and no one agrees on that.

On this subject, you need to go back and review what happened late last summer. When you do, you will see that some POS did not care about hunters and was making a political move.

No we don't know exactly how many deer were killed. The ONLY thing we know is how many reported their kills. I thought the WAG's were closer! LOL!

I could make an educated guess based on old data and come just as close as the DNR using the new regestration data with their fudging guesses.

I forgot that we knew exactly how many deer were killed under the mail survey.

It doesn't really matter how they use the data. That is a completely different topic and they could use the data in the same manner as before. What matters is the accuracy difference and cost difference between the old way and the new system.

The change isn't about how they use data it is about how they collect data.

So does anybody think that decriminalizing and lowering the penalties for those that fail to register deer is a bad idea?

They will probably add a allotment of 10K to the law.
That way a referendum can not start just like they are doing with all the new Michigan gun laws coming.

$150 and no hunting and fishing licenses for 5 years. Easy.

If you aren’t responsible enough to spend 2 mins checking in a deer you’re not responsible enough to hunt or fish.

Amen. I would raise the fine and have the proceeds go to something like disabled hunts etc. we have enough of a perception problem in the general community as it is. Catering to garbage doesn’t help that at all. This is an extremely low bar. If you can’t meet it I don’t want you in the woods around anyone with a weapon. Your priorities, decision making, and lack of respect for the resource are all questionable at best.
