I buy mine from the neighborhood sport shop, maybe you guys should consider supporting your local businesses.....before there are none. I prefer that my money stay in Higgins Lake Michigan, instead of a billionaires pocket in bentonville arkansas

Well there are a couple ways to look at this one. I am generally all for supporting the little guy. But in this instance wouldn't it make more sense to buy from walmart? If buying with a credit or debit card actually costs the business money wouldn't it be better to stick that fee to Walmart vs sticking it to the little guy? I know there is the option to pay cash but this year I shelled out well over 300 for me and my two sons for tags over a couple trips for licenses. I am too lazy to go out of my way to get that much cash.....and if I did the little guy isn't making a profit on those sales anyway. Unless I buy something in his store in the process.

If I'm not mistaken, places that sell hunting licenses make 0 dollars on license sales much like the lottery..They make their money on your other purchases..They sell licenses to get you in the door..

I've hunted state land for 18 years. This happens every year by the same guys. Don't act like this doesn't happen. This is why we need check stations like ohio

Each credit card transaction costs the store a % or a flat fee, don't remember which or if some of them differ.

They actually have to pay to sell licenses now!!! And your right they don't make a dime from it except to draw in other business. That's no good what so ever I believe they changed this to making businesses pay around 8yrs ago?

We NEED to model Ohio on a lot more things then just this when it comes to outdoor activities like hunting and fishing.
But the mandatory check stations would give us a better number on harvest but we will still have people who will shoot them on their property and process them at home. But better than what we have now

I think we should model some of this.
Certain categories of persons are exempted from buying licenses, permits, and stamps:

  • Ohio resident landowners, spouses, and their children are not required to have a hunting license, fur taker permit, either-sex deer permit, antlerless deer permit, spring or fall turkey permit, or Ohio Wetlands Habitat Stamp when hunting or trapping on land they own.
  • A nonresident landowner, and the spouse and children living with the landowner, may hunt on that property without a license, either-sex deer permit, antlerless deer permit, spring or fall turkey permit, Ohio Wetlands Habitat Stamp, or fur taker permit if the nonresident's home state allows residents of Ohio owning property in the nonresident's home state, and the spouse and children living with the Ohio property owner, to hunt without a license, deer permit, spring or fall turkey permit, wetlands habitat stamp, or fur taker permit.
  • A member of a limited liability company or partnership is a landowner provided the member is an Ohio resident and the limited liability company or limited liability partnership consists of three or fewer individual members or partners, or the beneficiary or trustee of a trust that has three or fewer trustees or beneficiaries.
  • Tenants and their children on land on which they reside and from which they derive the majority (more than 50 percent) of their income from agricultural production on that land are not required to have a hunting license, fur taker permit, either-sex deer permit, antlerless deer permit, spring or fall turkey permit, or Ohio Wetlands Habitat Stamp when they are hunting or trapping on land where they reside.
  • Ohio resident landowners' grandchildren who are under 18 years of age are not required to have a hunting license or an Ohio Wetlands Habitat Stamp while hunting on their grandparents' land. All other licenses and permits are required.
  • Members of the U.S. Armed Forces on active duty while on leave or furlough are not required to purchase a hunting license, Ohio Wetlands Habitat Stamp, or fur taker permit. All other licenses and permits are required.
Members of the U.S. Armed Forces on active duty stationed in Ohio, but NOT on leave or furlough are required to purchase a resident Ohio hunting license and other applicable permits before hunting deer, turkey, or hunting and trapping

Each store has their own deal with a credit card processing company. There are alot more and better options than their used to be for small business owners. It goes by the amount of transactions you deal with. If you only have a few a month like an auto mechanic or a body shop you might pay 75 cents per transaction. If you are a mega store like a walmart or meijer it could be a few pennies. Some pay a percentage up to a flat fee and some pay a flat fee.

So when you buy a license at your local bait shop it probably costs him somewhere between 10 cents and 50 cents depending on how busy his store is. If you buy at Walmart it costs them 2-3 cents.

Last I heard, and that was a couple years ago at our local spot it was $2 a transaction.

In regards to buying local. Don't know about the financial aspect of license sales. But that not all I buy... For instance picked up a half dozen arrows a while back from the bait shop....about $4 cheaper than the big box store. And am going to order a pair of arctic pro's soon out of the wholesale catalog...probably about $30 or so cheaper than the big guys.

If you see this Barnacle Bill, I want size 10 / 10 1/2.

Exactly why I won't even use the debit in a mom n pop store, cash only. The one I purchesed from this year has an, out of my network ATM, pulled out cash before making that purchase. 9 times out of 10, my licenses are purchased from one of two little guys.

It's WAY easier to get away with illegal tagging in ohio.

How? I was getting gas and a cop walked up and looked for the pin number written on my tag, then asked if he needed to call it in to check it. ..

My brother lives down there and said they throw the book at anyone not playing by the rules

I am hunting there this year. I purchased my license online, and printed it from my home computer. I made two copies in case I lost one copy. You are required to call the deer in to register by noon the following day, and you don't put your actual tag on the deer... you make your own tag. All you have to do is get that deer cut up by noon the next day, have another copy of your tag already printed, throw out the tag you "made" and your hunting again. You could even get checked between shooting the deer and calling in the next day as long as you tell the officer your intention is to register by noon the following day.
Our license system is pretty good.

It is difficult enough for me to try to understand and obey laws, I don't burn the energy to discover ways to skirt them. Those that do, will eventually slip up, as they don't seem to sharpest tools in the shed.

Actually.....

Thanks for the response deadshort!

This is intersting to me. I always wondered why they always do the migratory bird hunt questions so many times when I buy a hunting license. I have a couple of them printed out on my tags this yr I believe. You would think the computer would flag it if you already took the survey this yr. Looks like the license agents are getting an extra 50 cents so they are sure to ask if they can.

If you have multiple surveys they might have a different 3 digit license code associated with each. Not even sure what that means. [emoji15][emoji1]
