I changed the oil in the lower unit on my 40 hp Johnson. I thought things went well. Now I have a small amount of oil leaking from the bottom screw. I have tried to tighten it with no luck. Is there an O ring or any other ideas? I did not strip it. But it's got me bothered. Thanks for any ideas.

Like MadCatter said, you should have some kind of seal in there. A few cents at the boat store. If your "screw" is not a magnetic drain plug, replace it with one. Should be under $10.

What is the advantage of a magnetic drain plug? Seems like I've heard this before but don't remember the reason. Thanks.

It attracts minute metal shavings that come from the lower unit as the gears grind together.

Getting those shavings out prolongs the life of the L-U.
