Caught these 3 walleye within the last hour of daylight tonight. All 3 fish are around 15 1/2." All three of them were very aggressive, and smacked my rapala. Was on the ice around 2pm, and didn't start marking fish until 5-5:30pm. Lost at least 5 bigger fish, that gave me a couple nice runs, but the hook popp'd out. From 5:30 until around 7, it was nothing but fish. It was crazy. Lost a few other fish, but didn't see them.

Good Job! Heres a report for you guys. I Have heard first hand some hogs are starting to show up in the river. I had a customer drop off a 30" incher. He also got a 26 incher last night as well. He said everyone around him started getting into some big fish at the same time yesterday evening. The night before he saw some hogs caught as well. I beleive he was by the independence bridge.

Yep figures. Always a day or so after the tournament ends. Maybe they should run the tourny in the middle of Feb, instead of last week of Jan - first week of Feb. Would make for a more interesting tourny.

The reason they don't have the tournament at a later date is because of the fear that a lot more big females would be taken and of course not released.

I don't know the reason why the contest is on those dates but its not because of the spawners.Nice fish Fly.

Why wouldn't be because of the spawners? Why do you think the river closes on March 15th? That's the reason.. so the fish can do their thing unmolested.

Hmmm. Well either "i personally" would like to see it moved forward a week. Start the tourny Feb 1st - 14th. I don't keep the bigger Walleyes, anways, they all get released, and I keep the memories Unless it's a monster Walleye, and has to bigger than the one that I have mounted already, which weighs around 9#, my biggest so far!! I didn't ask that to start a argument/debate, just wonder if any knew why. Thank you for your input Matt3.

Matt The river system does not have enough habitat to handle all the spawning fish.This came from the fisheries department.Only about 10% of what these fish need.

Matt3dddSteel, They don't give a crap about the spawners, they just have it then when there sure there is going to be ice. The hole thing cracks me up, the saginaw news and the city of saginaw take the credit for the whole deal. Dekett's bait and tackle started it with the help of WSGW radio. After the newspaper and the city of saginaw saw it could be something big, they tried to get involved and take all the credit for it all.I was good freinds with Steve and Kenny Dekett and have been down on the rivers since it started. The shiver on the river promotes killing big spawners, all the morons that never caught a big walleye think they have the winner and kill and weigh all those 8lber's and bigger, they just know any better

I'm with you , move it back a couple weeks and the winner takes it with a 15# fish every year!!! that would be a blast.ok i just got up had a smoke & a beer and thought about the walleye in the sag.catch em all cause 90% are planted and they will plant more every year!!!! just my 2 sense!
