I thought the lake trout is out of season now. Last week I fished St. Clair River and was really surprised then noticed a guy who put a nice laker on his rope. Is it legal to possess lake trout from St. Clair River now?

Lake trout are out of season in the st clair river, he must not have know.
Lake Trout is the only fish which has a season, rest salmon and trouts are open year round. At least in Canada side.

Some guys can't identify them, others can and still keep. I hope he just did not know.

I'm pretty sure Fasteight and his buddy Dave had a conversation with a conservation officer, where the CO told them the St Clair river is open. Incidentally, someone posted about the lakers they were catching last weekend. They really are a different fish this time of year, aren't they? Colors come out that I didn't know they had, and for some reason they actually seem to like to fight. (At least that's been my limited late-season laker experience.)

Lake Huron and SCR are different bodies of water.

Lakers are legel in the SCR year round on the U.S. side.

Well on the canadian side, they are closed.
I tried to find in the Michigan regs' but no luck. My son got 3 today, 6,8,10 pounds in the st clair trying for rainbows. The lakers seem to be very active. These were caught flatlining off the back, I usually only catch them down deep in lake huron in the spring.

Lake huron rules are here: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/page14_60897_7.pdf

SCR is here: http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10364_10888_23815-65066--,00.html

These are for U.S. waters.

Another thing not too many people know it that if you troll for salmon and trout in SCR, you have to fish 2 rods per person. Not 3 like in the great lakes. That can be read here: http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10364_10888_23815-65054--,00.html

I saw quite a few guys trolling the Pere Marquette Lake fishing 3 rods per person. It is against the rules.

we only just started with 2 in the lake for 2002, still one in the river for us. I would love to put out 2 and 3 rods.
