A person was out on Walled Lake yesterday. He caught some dink perch meaning he was in 20' or more... My past experience of Turtlehead on Kent poses a little current,(based on water levels), but if the water is down and the current is nil, I can believe it...

I drove thru Kensington this afternoon and seen one lonely soul fishing
in front of the big dock, I did not stop and check the ice there.

I then went up route 5 and seen at least a dozen folks fishing
the west bay, just south of Turtlehead pkg.
This bay is almost all 6 ft deep in the winter with no current.
I was able to walk out without using a board since ice was
locked in to shore mostly.

I walked around and drilled a few test hole and found it was
all good 4 to 5 inches of ice. No slush.
The 12 people I seen out there were fishing a couple hundred
yards out in a small 30 yd circle and everyone seem to have
a small pile of gills next to them.
None huge, but some I'd definitely toss in the pan.

But right now safe Ice is hard to come by and I'll
be going back there tomorrow with some spike and waxies.

Also 1 person mentioned they seen a nice fat 28 inch northern
caught off a tipup yesterday along with a few nice crappies.

The east bay on the other side of rte 5 looked iffy to me.

I was there yesterday and the ice in the area was in great shape.
Looks like we've gained an inch or so in the last few days.
Mostly smaller gills were on the bite along with a few between
7 and 8 inch.
At this point, I'll take good ice where I can get it!
Spikes/Mousies on micro jigs seem to be preferred.

I drove through Metro Beach yesterday and didn't see anyone fishing (ice or otherwise).

Do you think the marinas and causeways leading out to the lake would be an ok place to throw a minnow and bobber?

Fished the bay at Kent tonight and brought home 15 nice gills and 2 good crappies.
Ice was a solid 5 inches today and the shore ice was frozen good.
Seen one person with a lantern as I was leaving fishing in the 30 ft
off the west launch.

WOW, i thought it would've been open for 2 weeks. After that cold snap, Kent had about 6-7 inches, i thought for sure the ice would be gone by now.

Hello Raf
The permanent shanty is off the west boat launch in front of the big dock.
This is the deep basin of the lake.
If you have a metropark map look on the back and it will show
a detailed map of each park.
Turtlehead is off of route 5.
If you stop at the park office you can get a map of the lake which will show depths and where the old river channel runs thru it which can be dangerous right about now and comes in real close just north of turtlehead pkg.
Here's a link to Kensington...just click on map...once you see where
rte 5 is...you'll know why it is called turtlehead. lol

Rte 5 and turtlehead are more like a peninsula that goes down the center of the lake.
Most of the fishing has been occuring on the west side of rte 5 before
you get to the area that is designated as turtlehead pkg.
If it's sunny tommorow, the bite won't occur usually until
430 to 600.
If you looking to catch all 8 inch gills, you may want to find another lake.
The ones I keep here are from 7 inch up to 8 with an occasional 9 incher.
The gills are fatter here than say Orchard.
The lakes on a comeback and it takes quite a few years for
gills to grow.
Another 2 years and I'll be back to keeping 8" and above here.
Personally I'd be on a different lake right now,but safe ice has been hard to come by this year.
Another reason I do like this lake is that all vehicles are prohibited
on the ice.
