Make a 12 foot overhang on one side for outdoor but covered storage.
It does not add that much to the overall cost for what you do get.
Gravel under the overhang for drainage.

I thought my 36x48 barn would be perfect. Could have went a bit larger but didn't want to. Wanted all my toys to have a home and didn't figure I'd add many more toys. Still don't plan on it but I have a couple nice trailers I'd like to keep inside but room is limited. I do have room on one side for a lean to. A 12x36 lean to would be a great size to store a 7x18 and 7x14 trailer back to back. Having one really adds extra room for covered storage

 

Never big enough but 30x40/50 ain't bad at all, I have 30x48. A big overhang would be nice, on the east side if possible. Also wished I put in polycarb translucent panels high on the south side. I installed big doors on both ends to drive through, not for everyone but I like it. Looks like a little hill there, build up a small berm along that side wall to divert water flow.

 

I almost did a drive thru barn but realized with truck and boat trailer attached, the barn wouldn't be long enough for how I had to build it on my property. I would have had to use the 36ft width for the drive thru. Even if I could have used the 48ft length for it, there would be too much stored in the barn to use it for a parking lot for truck and trailer attached. All sounded good at first but reality and practicality made the decision.

 

I wish I had made mine higher and longer. Everyone told make it longer but I was sure 40 feet was a good size. I should have gone 60 with a leanto

 

I built as big as my zoning allowed. Also as high as zoning allowed, 15' to the roof peak, which limited how wide I could go and have 10' walls to 30'

 

I will probably end up going 30x50 with 14’ sidewalls after all is said and done. I am limited on the sides by my septic and setback from property line. I originally wanted a fully enclosed lean so it could be my workshop but I’d have to make the main building smaller. I could still do that, just have to change a few things, but think I’d be happier with a bigger main building.

As one of my neighbors said, "There's only one size of barn, not big enough". Congrats, build it as large as the budget and site constraints allow.

 

Last summer at the cabin I built a 30x48 x14 with a 10x48 lean to on one side. Still working on landscaping and want to add a mezzanine inside for some extra storage. Big enough for my needs as I have 24x32 barn at home and two and a half car garages at both places.

 

Another vote for a big lean. Fairly inexpensive and great use of space for items that you just need to keep dry.

 

Sounds like he can't do that due to the setback requirements from the property line and his septic is on the opposite side.
