Looking for any insight that ya'll might have. I am planning a trip to Isle Royale and looking to go from Windigo to Rock Harbor. Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

I've made that trip along the infamous Greenstone Ridge and its AWESOME. Can even give you some hints so you dont make the mistakes we made ! LOL (ie: there's no water on the Windigo side)
Hope to head back to I.R, again next summer (but not for another cross island trek).

pm me with any specific questions you might have. I have the island map and campsite info.

We are planning for a trip in Aug 04. We are looking to get from Rock Harbor to Windigo then hike back to RH. Can anyone tell me if the trip from RH to Windigo be made in one day after getting off from the Copper Harbor boat?

Thanks to all and to all a... you know the rest.

No way, no how!!! You'll be lucky if you make it to three mile camp, and at that you'll be pulling off your boots and asking **** where's the mole skin. No matter how much think your prepared, YOUR NOT PREPARED, prepare some more. Yes there's trails, but because of the rocky nature of the island, there's lots of half sticking out of the ground rocks just waiting to twist an ankle. Look at a map, Rock Harbor to Windigo has to be 30 miles as the crow flys. We spent 7 or 9 days on the island and only walked the eastern 2/5's of the island and we did alot of walking every day, getting up and eating, then planning to get to the next campground by early to mid afternoon.

I am sorry for the confusion. My intent is to get from Rock Harbor to Windigo by boat. I know that by foot in one day would be a ridiculous and foolhardy attempt. I want to hike from Windigo to RH and I am looking to get from RH to Windigo first then hike back. I am hoping that I can get off (stop it) the ferry from Copper Harbor and then get on a ferry to Windigo in one day, then start the trek. I hope this clears it up or is it still muddy?

Ahhhhh yes, maybe if I didn't read so fast I would of understood what you were getting at. I really don't know the answer to that one. I know there's island hopping boats but what the schedule is, i'm not sure.....Do a search for "Isle Royale", I found the offical island site real fast with loads of info. I had to look at the map to refresh my memory. If you go don't forget to pack and pack rod and some mepps spinners for those pike, and don't let the fox pee in your tackle box, or leave your boots outside of the tent at night. They'll steal them in a heartbeat.

The single most important thing in my mind when doing this trip is buy the best water filter you can get. When I went back in college my buddy and I tried to save money and figured we would just boil when we camped. BIG mistake. They are absolute gold. Also the shelters are definitley the way to go if you can get one. Hike early in the morning and relax in the afternoon. Definitley saves time on packing camp and such.
