Should have read the title more carefully where you mentioned lungs. Anyway, lung issue could be blood clots from the way the deer died. Seems to be a common theme on a google search. Pneumonia or a lung parasite came in as possible causes as well. I would probably email a pic to the DNR and see what they say.

I have a question of my own, How do you shoot something by mistake? It’s a serious question, no joke.
Because he shot a lone deer, and walked up on a fawn. Was too embarrassed to say he shot a fawn on a forum that talks about shooting mature deer.
To the op: no need to justify! You shot a deer. Eat it.
