I have a question for you huron fly fishers. Me and a co-worker got into a little discussion about stockerfest flies. He asked me where my flies were, I said right in that box. He seems to think since everbody says you have to use sparse streamers, or a certain 1 fly, that is what you have to use. I beg to differ. I didn't tie any, I have a lot of colors of boogers and stuff which I think would be fine. Opinions please!

Only fished stockerfest a few times, but my advice is bigger early, smaller as time goes on. Wolley buggers work well in the first and second weekend, but after that, you may want to use a size 12 and up nymph hanging off a dry fly.

streamers, streamers, streamers. any colors, big small, ugly, it really doesnt matter. i started tying my own a couple years ago and experimented with lots of homeade patterns and most if not all hooked fish there. ive caught them on nymphs but stopped using them after i learned how much more effective, fun, and active stripping streamers was. my huron box is full of rabbit strip zonkers, wooly buggers in lots of odd colors, and other unamed creations. in my experience any fly that you can give action to by stripping in your line will get the fishes attention and cause them to strike at wixom. ill tie on a white or yellow fly first, but change them often if they dont hit it. GOOD LUCK see you there.

Yeah, you can go with big flashy streamers the first couple days. Glo bugs drifted low can be just as productive.

Last year a guy fishing a hole just below me on the opener was killing them on small Pheasant and Prince nymphs.

You can do a little of everything early on, but dries will be more effective later, with nymphs working until all the stockers are caught or killed by high temps.
