The Flats Show
2004 Hunting Decoy Show and Competition 2004
The 2004 Flats Show, for the St. Clair Flats Wildfowl Association, will be April 3rd & 4th . The Flats Show is now a 2-day event with a complete new venue. We are continuing with our popular Song Bird & Birds of Prey competitions as well as the new IWFCA Endangered Species competition.
We are now an IWFCA (International Wildfowl & Fish Carving Association) affiliated club and our Full Size Hunting Decoy competition is an IWFCA event. Rules for our Market Gunner Competition have changed (01/12/04) and our Market Gunner Singles now follow the IWFCA Working Decoy rules (see our website), though Class birds will be accepted. We have also become an affiliate club with the MWCA (Michigan Wood Carving Association) which will give us a much broader base for competition and participation. The Market Gunner 3-Rig will remain a stand off competition, though the pool venue will allow some closer inspection by the judges.
The Comfort Inn, 31960 Little Mack, Roseville, MI 48066, phone: (586) 296-6700, fax: (586) 296-7412 has become the new home for the Flats Show.
We have reserved a block of rooms at the Comfort Inn for those staying overnight. The phone number for info & room reservations is: (586) 296-6700. Be sure to indicate that you are with the SCFWA in order to get the special show rates.
There will be a raffle with 3 individual decoys as well as a Grand Prize in the raffle of a 3 bird rig of Pintail, hand carved and painted. This is the 2nd year for our 3 bird raffle rig. We will also have an auction on Saturday afternoon with many hand carved and hand painted birds available along with artwork and hunting stuff.
Several demonstrations and seminars will be going on during the show, including painting & carving. We are also working on a decoy swap by show attendees. This has proven popular at other shows and some of the websites we visit.
This year will be the second year for the Kids Painting Seminar. The Canvasback Drake Sleeper will be this years bird. The kids are able to paint the same birds as the Flats Rig. Mark Davenport is organizing this event and must be contacted to pre-register your child for this event as space is limited to 25 participants.
We have undertaken a collectors edition show book. This will highlight the Flats region of Lake St. Clair as well as area artists, carvers, hunters and a flavor of the region. Our featured artist is Dave Bollman whose Frank Cummins Print will be the highlight of our cover. This book will become a feature of our 2005 Flats Show.
The 2003 Flats Rig-Goldeneye was a resounding success and will be continued with a different bird each year. Our 2004 Flats Rig will be Canvasbacks. Each of a dozen or more decoys will be carved by different club or affiliate carvers and auctioned in rigs of 3-birds. There will be silent as well as auction bidding on these rigs. There may also be a bid rig on Ebay.
Our competition includes: Full Size Hunting Decoys (IWFCA), Market Gunners, 3 Bird-Rig Market Gunners, Miniatures, Song Birds, Shore Birds, Carve a Feather, Birds of Prey, Endangered Species. These competitions are open to all carvers and we have a junior division as well.

HISTORY: The St. Clair Flats Wildfowl Association was formed in 1984 with its first competition at the Algonac City Park. The St. Clair Flats area of Lake St. Clair is an Old World Market Gunning area that is rich in the hunting, boat building and decoy carving traditions. Many of the boat building, decoy carving, hunters of the time had their roots at the Chris Craft Boat Company that was also begun in Algonac. The Chris Craft Company began with the Smith brothers carving decoys and building duck hunting boats for themselves and friends. We are carrying on this tradition. Our show was moved to Harsens Island (St. Clair Flats) in 1988 and then to Port Huron in 1993 and then to the VFW Hall in New Baltimore in 1995. Year 2001 brought our show to the banquet hall at the Salt River Golf Course. 2002 & 2003 shows were hosted at The Best Western-ConCorde Inn ..near the shores of Lake St. Clair. The 2004 Flats Show brings us a 2-day event at the Comfort Inn, Roseville, Michigan a short shot from the shores of The Flats.
SCFWA has a purchase award for the Best of Show Winner. We are unique in this practice and have all but one of the decoys from our 20 years of shows. The SCFWA permanent collection of Purchase Award-Best of Show Decoys, consisting of 18 decoys, are on display at the Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Park Nature Center in Harrison Township, Michigan at the East End of Metropolitan Parkway (exit 236 from I-94). This collection will be on display at our 2004 show. Along with the Purchase Award, the Best of Show Winner in IWFCA Full Size Hunting Birds as well as the Best of Show Winner in our Market Gunner Singles will receive a free Saturday night room/suite as an added bonus. The 2003 winners have already received their bonus suite notices and this suite bonus will become a part of our show.
