First time caller, errr, braid purchaser…
Just pulled the trigger on a new reel. Capacity specs for braid are:
20-260, 30-235, 40-185
Yup, a big-un. (5000). Idea is to set up a dedicated rod reel combo for casting to (Lk MI) pier Kings exclusively, rather than other Lakes, species, techniques etc. Rod will be Okuma SST 9’9” H. So just chuck the wobbly thing as far as possible.
Over the years I have read too much about braid. Rather than more over-thinking of that after an overthought drop of some Benjamins, brand & # test will likely come down to what Captain Chuck’s offers in bulk installation so I’m not tying my first ever braid knot at a point meant to last several years - pay the man who does it every day is my choice. And focus on learning & practicing at the other end. Seems likely I will end up with Power Pro to start and maybe shop upgrade options some future year.
Is a 5000 spool a little overkill for this? Probably. But partway into a 3rd Benjamin, does an Andrew Jackson make much difference? I only plan to make this purchase once.
My thinking on the 5000 isn’t that I will need all that line at once for a battle with Moby Dick. Rather, I want to be able to survive a calamitous line break from whatever reason - and be able to keep right on fishing, right then. When the Kings are truly in, action can be very steady.
So what I can’t decide is how much mono backing to use towards that goal - if any? Backing seems wise, but with a lifetime of content with regular ole mono, I don’t know the choices on that.
