I worked for a auto parts store and we used to sell a product called Mar-Hyde. I believe it also goes under the corporation name of Tal-Strip.
It is a vinyl paint that comes in a brushable form or a spray. You can get it mixed to whatever colour you want. It goes on easliy with a foam brush and is used for restoring old dashboards, door panels, etc.
I used it on the rubber top of an old steel desk that I have been using for about 15 years now and it still looks the same as the day I painted it.
I believe we used to sell a spray can for about $15 (cdn) and a mixed pint for about $25.
Try a Carquest or similiar type of store.
