I got my 1st of the season yesterday. I hunt w/o a dog and I hunt with a 22. I get very few rabbits per year (3-5), but I enjoy the exercise.

L&O,
We have been out a few times this year, usually 3-4 guys. Someone among us has gotten one or two each time.
We have not been using dogs and use shotguns.
We see tons of tracks in the spots we have been going, but the last time I think we were a little early in the day before the sun really came out, so the bunnies weren't out sunning themselves yet. My dad got one though. I might be back out this weekend, depending on how my last days of deerhunting go.
Good luck.

I've gotten 7 or 8 so far this year. I haven't been out lately cause I'm a brush buster and walking in 2ft. of snow is just too much work. Big Al
Takin da boyz out tomorrow afternoon see if we can make a fricasse (sp?) for dinner...:0)

mikeylikesit...and he always will...
I got another one the day after the first one. I precooked them and then fried them in oil. They didn't turn out to good. Maybe it was the canola oil we used in frying. My dog was happy with the meals though. Any suggestions on cooking ?
My wife and I have been out a few times this year. She has killed one, I have killed zero. I have been playing dog since our beagle seems to have forgotten everything he has learned. He has decided that where the rabbits came from is more important than where they are going. This makes for an interesting hunt. I am hoping with a little more hunting he will straighten up and hunt right. Its a little hard on the dog with all this snow. Maybe thats part of the problem.. Any suggestions or ideals?

Only been out one time for rabbit and got one. Too much snow now for Bugsy the wonder Beagle & me, but we are keeping our fingers (paws)crossed for Jan. & Feb..

L&O: Just use rabbit in your favorite chicken recipe. I like to slow bake them in cream of mushroom or cream of chicken soup. Add a little cooking wine and sour cream to the soup, cover the rabbit with the soup/wine mixture in a glass cooking pan and cook until golden brown. The slower, the better.

PS: Canola oil, like olive oil, is a little heavy for frying game meet. Always use a lite veggie oil.

Good luck.

L&O: DILLIGAF is more a state of mind than a name. It is how I try to approach things while I'm at deer, rabbit, fish and bird camp. No President yet? Lions lost again? Put in 70 hrs. at work last week? Didn't get a deer? Didn't catch a fish? DILLIGAF!

Our hunt club is called DILLIGAF Hunt Club. We try to have a good time and the taking of game takes a back seat to enjoying our time in the woods. DILLIGAF just means that when you are up north hunting, fishing or scouting, nothing else matters!

Well Saturday six of us went on our annual rabbit hunt. We have done this every year for the last 4 years. It is a great time, we use recurves, longbows or sling shots.
The deep snow had us all wondering if we would get any bunnies.

Well the first area we hunted, we took 3 rabbits in about 2 hours. Two were taken with recurves and one with a slingshot. The deep snow seemed to slow the rabbits down, but they would only run a short distance and hole up.

I have a 15 inch beagle, for the most part he just helped jump rabbits. However he was able to run one back to us nice, despite the deep snow.

We hunted the rest of the day with no luck. We never seen another rabbit all day, they seemed to hole up after the morning hours. Last year we had no snow and took 3 bunnies, the year prior we had perfect conditions, (3 inches of snow) and took 5.

BISHS,
That's darn good considering the weapons that you were using. Slingshot !? I bet that there aren't a dozen rabbits taken a year in Mich. with a slingshot. Pretty amazing.
Here's a picture of a pair of bunnies I shot a couple of weeks ago. Used a Ruger 1022 magnum...hope this works...

Yea, getting one with the slingshot is pretty amazing. Most of us hunt with recurves so we use them for the rabbits. A couple of the guys do not hunt with recurves, so they feel more comfortable with the slingshots, the wrist rocket type. We were all quite amazed when the first rabbit was taken with a slingshot on a dead run! Two rabbits have been taken with slingshots in four years, (four hunting days).

Since we are not using guns, the rabbits keep running longer, and we get many oppurtunities.

Slingshot...WoW !! I gotta try that...:0)
Went out yesterday afternoon for a few...Couple times the dogs were completely over their heads in snow. It was good excercise though no bunnies...Theres always a next time.

mikeylikesit...so do the wascally wabbits...
January 20; at Elm Hall Mi. The Michigan Traditional Bowhunters will be having their annual rabbit hunt. Recurves and longbows only; must use blunts and wear orange. It is a great time last year we took 8 rabbits. Trophies are given to first and largest rabbit. Last Year's winners

L&O-I like them cooked on a grill with just some minor seasoning,I tried them fried also and couldn't get it right at first. Can't go wrong with the crock pot either.
Ranger-how old is your dog?Mine is 3 and hasn't experienced snow like this before.First time out this year I jumped a rabbit and called him on it,he took off after him and after about 30yards of plunging he stopped threw his head up looking in the direction of the rabbit then turned and looked at me as if to say"you really expect me to chase in this." He has run in normal snow before but this was different for him,It took a few short stints out for better conditioning but now he is fine again.have you ever run your dog in snow before or was he trained on dry land?

Hey guys, it's time to strap on the snowshoes. If you have never used them you would be surprised how easy it is to get around. I use Michigan type shoes(home made)
and they handle brush fairly well. As far as slingshots (wrist rocket type) with some practice again you would be surprised how accurate they can be.

I have not been able to get out yet, but my brother and uncle have gotten 12 this year. All of them were snowshoe.
