The season is over and I was looking at some pictures. Thought I would post my lab with his first grouse of 2003. He is two years old and this was his first grouse season, that is his first grouse ever. Already looking forward to next year!

Actually, he does both. When he hunts alone he will point. With other labs it seems almost like a race to the birds. I have never hunted with other pointers, their owners are not to eager to expose their "true" pointing dogs to a lab.

I found out only recently that he pointed so my training with him has been minimal. Up to now it was all on retreives, hunting close, commands, etc. They have some wonderful pointing labs that are just spectacular, with a price to match.

Pretty controversial topic. Many do not want the breed to be modified. Breed the dog to the standard. In some circles a pointing lab is considered an undersirable. I am almost an exclusive upland hunter and love my lab and will encourage his pointing abilities. The breed is very intelligent and quick to pick up on the concept. Many web sites exist and there is a book out about training and the pointing lab. Just do a search on the web and you will see a long list. Here are a few to help you get started.....
