I'd like to buy a handheld GPS, mainly for ice fishing. Can I get by with the lower end models like the eTrex H or the GPS72 and accurately mark / return to the X.

Or is it worth it to get one that supports maps, maybe I would find more use for it??

You can pick up a used Garmin gps12 on ebay for around $50. Bought mine probably 8-10 years ago and it still serves my purpose quite well. I never had the need for a map on my gps screen. All I ever wanted was to mark a place and be able to get back to it later on.

The accuracy is the same as ones you can get today. "Accuracy" is really a fudge factor dictated by Uncle Sam and programmed into the satellites that send the signal to your gps. You don't need to get a new unit to get up-to-date pinpoint results.

I had an etrex legend for 3 years until I lost it last year :(. It did everything I ever wanted to do and more. Accuracy depends a lot on location, but on the ice I could always find my holes from the day before.
