Well today while fishing on the river Me and a buddy of mine had pretty day fishing. We got there at 6am this morning.Between 9:30 am and 1:30pm we caught 6 fish bewteen the 2 of us.My buddy caught a 4lb,6.5.and 7lb brown.I caught 3.5lb 5lb brown and a 6lb steelie. My buddy was catching fish on spoons, bommbers, and believe or not pencil plugs. All my fish were caught on spoons.Well this was the good news.My buddy left ealy in the afternoon and I stayed till evening.at the end of the day just as I was pulling my 1st rod out of the water all my fish decided to untie my knot at the end of the stringer and release themself back into the river to swim away freely.Talk about suffering the agony of defeet after experiencing the thrill of victory.
oh well I guess leaves more room in my freezer for some other fish like jacks and kings we should be catching sometime soon hopefully.I guess the man upstairs didnt want me to have to all that work cleaning those fish after I got home today.

Man I gotta get out to the St. Clair River sometime soon...seems there are alot of fish to be had!
That sucks about loosing your fish. But at least you had fun, right?

Nice report!
Yeah stelmon I had a blast alright.especialy when me and my buddy both simultaniously hooked into a fish at the sametime.it was totaly awesome seeing both of our rods going off at once.this was my buddys 1st time ever catching trout of any species anywhere. He also had fish all of last fall during salmon, steelhead, and lake trout season trying deperately to catch something but being unsucessful. So he paid his dues and it was his turn for catching fish.Yeah it was bummer losing those fish but if they survive after escaping Im sure they wont bite on anything for a long time and live to grow much larger.:D I pratice catch and release fishing quite often but I sure didnt plan on it today.

Well they wouldnt die right away because they were good and lively before they got off the rope. Its the holes in the bottom of jaws that have to heal without getting infected.Depends on how stressed the fish were also.they might swim off but die later in a few days or weeks.
Had the same thing happen last fall. My brother and I lost 5 salmon the same way. Funny thing is we baught a new stringer with a metal loop for the next days outing. Well, we had six salmon on it this time, and when lifting them out of the river the damn stringer broke. My brother was able to throw 2 of 'em onto the bank, but the rest got away. We went home with only one fish each at the end of the weekend. We laugh about it now, but boy were we pissed at the time. :)

Seeing these, "lost fish from a stringer"stories brings back bad memories of last years Lexington salmon tourney for me. I know I had close to the winning weight salmon.(it was a BIG female about 20 pounds) I was SO pumped!! I was in a small inflatable inside Lexington harbor and the fight was awesome. I netted the hog, and clipped it on the metal looped stringer. When some kids came by, they wanted to see the fish I had just caught. So I leaned over to lift up the stringer and show it off when........OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ........the clip was bent and the fish was GONE :( I felt like crying all the way home..........it was the only bite I had that day, and I think it would have won a prize.

Last fall I was getting ready to leave the boardman. I ran into my friend who I had fished with a little earliar in the year. He was telling me how he had caught a stringer with a nice silver salmon on it. Then my other friend comes along and starts telling me the story of how he lost a bright silver salmon on a stringer the other day. Turned out to be the same fish and we were laughing the hole time. At least he got his stringer back, right???

:p

Yep I was pissed as well when it happened.I know there will be some laughing moments about it sometime.
Well I think Im giving up on rope stringers and Im just going to throw my cooler in the back of my car for keeping my fish in.No more lost fish for me.:D
Hey "stinger63" sorry to hear about your loss! Sounds like you still had fun though. Were you fishing North of PG?

See you there Saturday!
Hey stinger,
How do you guys fish for those browns and steelies off of the River there? Is there any casting involved, or is it a downrigger-like setup using the current to give the lure action? I was always wondering this when I see posts about fishing the ST. Clair river. It seems that if you have to use all the heavy equpt. for downrigger fishing that the fight would not be as fun as fishing with 6lb test and casting. I was just wondering.....thanks :D

Salmonous Maximus - because of the strong, fast current the rigs we us on the river are pretty heavy duty.

Most of the guys use short med-heavy to heavy action rods, 17#+ test and a 2 lb. pound weight below a 3-way swivel. A length of leader is then attached to the other end of the 3-way swivel and the plug, bait or spoon is attached. The current is what provides the action to your lure.

There are spots further South along the river (where the current is not as strong) where guys have good success on Browns using 6 lb test, noodle rods & live bait.

HELLO WALLEYEVISION THE WAY ME AND MY BUDS FISH IS TO USE A NOODLE ROD 6LB. VANISH 3 WAY SWIVEL SMALL AND A SOCK WEIGHT ABOUT 6 INCH DROPPER AND 3 FEET ON THE HOOK LEADER TIPPED WITH A MINNOW OR A STEAMER MINNOW , THIS MOSTLY DONE BEHIND THE FILTRATION PLANT DO TO THE FACT THAT THE REST OF THE AREA IS TAKEN UP BY STILL FISHERMEN UNLESS YOU GO DURING THE WEEK .
I FIND THAT IT'S WAY MORE FUN NOT TO MENTION WAY MORE PRODUCTIVE. STILL FISHING IT'S COOL BUT WAY LAID BACK FOR ME GREAT THING TO DO IF LIKE THAT .

Hello Ed, I fish the North side of the treatment plant quite a bit and I will admit there are times when the noodle guys at the South end of the wall are kicking my butt on the Browns, but I have caught a few Kings & Steelhead there that almost had my "pool cue" bent in two! :D

Maybe I'll bring along my noodle next time out? Just incase. :D

Looking forward to meeting your there! I'm planning on heading up next Saturday. Bringing the Smelt net too!

Sounds good! Planning on being there around 12 or 1 on Saturday.

WALLEYE: That method sounds fairly easy to do....I might give it a try. What about using releases like fishing out in a boat though? It seems this would make for a better fight.....just you and the fish....no two pound weights. If people do use releases, how do they set up the downrigger assembly? Can use just run a ball down next to the breakwall and tie it off to something like a cleat or pole? Then you could run two releases off that ball at various depths. Would this work? Thanks

I'M SURE IT CAN BE DONE I'VE SEEN ALOT OF THINGS TRYED BEFORE ,SO GIVE IT TRY AND LET US KNOW ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE .
