When you guys talk about a fixed slider say 10 feet over the ball how do you keep it there, rubber bands? What ive only ever did was free sliders. Second year rookie in need of a schooling by the veterans. Thanks guys. Nate(Fishin Addiction)

I use tiny rubberbands that easily slide throught rod guides and on to reels. Some guys use surgical tubing set ups and others use small clips or releases. Free sliders can be just as, if not more effective. Figure 2/3 of the way down on a free slider.

I was just thinking about this thread, i am new at this great lakes fishing also, but could'nt you use a stacker release on your slider and then when the main line got the fish it would release the slider. What do ya think?

I just picked up some Scooter clips, coastlocks with a rubber disc molded on. Basically rig just like a free slider but the disc end is split to accept the mainline. A very simple idea and looks like it will work well. $6 for a pack of 4, but if they work well, I may see if I can make my own.

I used the surgical tube method last year and had no problems at all. It was very simple and although Myramar's rig works well, you still need to thread the line through the realease before tying on the lock snap. With surgical tubing, you just pull a loop of the main line through the slit in the tube and hook on you leader. This makes changing leaders easy. Either method works, just find which is easiest for you.

Or you can just have a few dozen pretied fixed sliders ready to roll on your boat. We have three different size holders around the boat for free sliders, fixed sliders, and flies. We take those foam tube that are for your pool and cut them up into foot long sections. Then just make a shallow cut around them and you can wrap a leader into it. When you need a leader grab one off the holder snap on a bait and your ready to clip it on and go. That light weight offshore release with the beads stacked behind its a great idea jade.. I hadnt made that modification to my setup yet but oh I soon will!! Haha.. bring it on baby..

Fisherman are great we all keep trying to out gadget(re-invent the wheel)each other. The problem I've run into using the clip method is when you catch a fish on the main line the slider clip has a tendency to spin and wind the slider around the main line. Myself I think it's hard to beat the rubber band to hold the sliders but I almost had a boat sink because the bilge pump was full of rubber band so they are no longer welcomed on my boat. I'm going to try the new Alberta Clippers this year I heard they won't spin up on the main line and they are real easy to get off in a hurry.

if you ever do use a fixed slider, word of caution, have someone else on board. if a fish hits the main lure ,when the slider comes up you must remove it while your fighting the fish. not an easy task. a mate can remove the set slider for you.
