Fish finders help pinpoint finicky walleyes
Gofron says a fish-locator is "a necessity," when fishing for late-winter walleye.
"It seems like walleye are a curious fish, said Gofron, a 39-year-old Professional Walleye Trail champion. "There's no doubt that in cold water they are not as apt to come in and strike. So in order to get them to bite, you have to pull it away from them, entice them. Finally, they just get so mad, boom, they're caught."
The key is subtlety, he said.
"If you make a sudden move, up or down, they'll spook. An aggressive fish will hit it on the fall, but a sluggish fish, you always want to bring the bait up. Never drop it."
