My current favorite rod for jigging is a Fenwick HMX 6’6” medium fast. So yesterday I ordered a Fenwick Elite Tech in the same length, power and action, While online shopping for the rod, I noticed Fenwick now has what they call the Elite Walleye Rod (they dropped the “Tech” from the name). Does anyone have any experience with this newer version? Seems like the biggest difference is in the blank, but the handle is also different.

The new one is fantastic for feel. I have new and old. To me they are like night and day. The new blank is much better for sensitivity. IMO.

Didn't know that. Love my elite tech but kids broke it.. Those HMX are nice. Buddies got 5 or 6 on his boat. Might be the one I grab. Gotta bring my reel in and put it on all of them. The one that feels "right" will be with me !

Appreciate your opinion on the sensitivity. Hard to believe they could improve on the sensitivity that much. The handle / grips on the old look “warmer” for cold / wet days with how the cork extends over the top of the reel seat and is also in front of the seat. It’s a pretty big change for where your hand and fingers are for what could be hours at a time. I posted a pic of the change. Is it your opinion that you lost anything in the handle in exchange for the increased blank sensitivity?

It appears to me the difference is handle design and the durability of the blank. Personally I like the tech handle.

I just picked up two of the Elite Walleye for jigging. already have two HMG's that i use for casting, and one set up for jigging. Just my opinion...you probably wont have to worry about the handle on days below freezing.....the eyelets are too small for jigging with braid on cold days. Nothing irks me more than ice build up on a jigging rod. That being said i love the feel of them. Lightest set ups i have. I picked up the elite tech a few times in the store and always put them back on the shelf. The elite seems to be a tad bit stiffer action, but i could be wrong.

Thanks. I’m going to keep the Elite Tech I ordered but I need to do what you did and go actually pick up the Elite Walleye to see how it feels.

Someone in another thread mentioned Grab bag had the best price on them. Bass pro didn’t have a lot of options but they had a few. Maybe try cabelas in chesterfield. I’ve been able to get them to price match within 70 miles i believe.

I got an Elite last month & have the card right here.... says it's 37% stronger and 5% lighter.....37's a lot but 5% of a rod that's already light probably doesn't mean a whole lot....mine is a casting for BBing so I'm sure I'm gonna like it....nice rod for sure, only thing is I'd like a little more cork on the foregrip....

Believe it or not, Cork deadens sensitivity. The new rod grip looks to be a carbon poly where you grip the handle above the reel. That could make a huge difference in sensitivity. Probably why Sparky can tell the difference in feel. I love the full cork myself and prefer it but on my synthetic handled rods, sensitivity is better as well.

I believe it. I look forward to checking one of the new models out. I know I will like the Elite Tech and so far it sounds like the Elite is definitely an improvement, at least in terms of sensitivity. Thanks

I have one Elite Tech Smallmouth rod. Unfortunately the first time out, I broke off the tip in one of my boat seats. Tip got caught between the back and bottom and when the seat back got lifted, it snapped about 5" off the tip. Had to remove the next guide and put a new tip on it. It's basically a jig only rod now. Real fast and heavy now. Labeled medium. Very bummed. That rod isn't super sensitive but some of my synthetic handled where the blank is exposed thru the grip are very sensitive. Probably what they did with the new Elite rods.

Did you check with Fenwick to see what they'd do for you?

They'd probably send you a new rod for somewhere around 70% off.

Last year I broke a rod on a musky. Was only a 5 yr warranty and it was manufactured in 2014. St Croix sent me a new one for $70 or so, including shipping. Can't beat that.

You should read their warranty. It specifically says they'll make you a good deal on a replacement if it was your fault. Check with them and be honest and I bet they'll do something.
Pretty darn good warranty. Almost like some rifle scope warranties. I'll consider it but no receipt and it is a good fit for me using it for tube jigs on smallmouth Bass. Originally it was a 6'6" jigging rod but now around 6' and very fast and more heavy. Appreciate the info and will definitely remember it. I use Fenwick rods quite a bit. I'm sure I'll have another mishap

Didn't need a receipt for my St Croix. Just the number on the rod which indicated when the rod was made. It's the oldest the rod could be and going to shorten any warranty period since purchase, but heck they're still making you a good deal.

If it's working well the way it is, it's not worth it I suppose.

Agree 💯. It is carbon poly above the reel

Well, I just pulled the rod from my rod rack. It started out as a 7'2" rod. Its now 6'6" and very stiff and works great for vertical jigging and tube jigging. EliteTech Walleye Rigging rod. I sent them pics but they require a receipt. Sent pics and story. See what they tell me. Either way, I'm good. Kinda like the rod as is for a different technique than originally purchased for. I bought it for a slip bobber walleye rod. Never even got used for that purpose before the accident. Curious what kind of deal they offer for a dumb mistake like this.
