I always figured a fawn becomes a yearling when it gets to it's 1st birthday, so I consider this past springs fawn crop to be fawns until the next crop is born (May-ish). They're fawns well after they lose their spots, imo.
A yearling is an animal between its 1st & 2nd birthday.
When a hunter sees that another hunter has killed a 6 month old deer he shakes his head and calls it a fawn. When he mistakenly kills a button buck thinking that it was a doe, he calls it a yearling or a young/small deer. Not wanting to admit that he just killed a fawn.
