Last year while duck hunting a mid/mich lake were stopped by the DNR. We were hunting from our boat in the water off from the shore. They asked if we had permission to hunt there. We stated we didnt know we had to as we were hunting from our boat. WE did not pull the boat onto the shore. They said this lake had no state property so we could not hunt without a land owners permission. The land owners own to the middle of the lake (like a pie). They let us go with a warning stating they would be issueing tresspassing tickets next year. I never heard of such a thing on a public lake with a public access. Buildings and dwellings were of no issue.

Thanks for taking the time to respond

What the CO told you is correct. Even on a lake with public access doesn't make it legal to hunt anywhere on the lake. You must hunt on the states riparian area and nobody elses' without the riparian's permission. It has always been like that. The only public waters you could hunt anywhere on the surface of that water without permission are Great Lakes and connecting waters or lakes completely surrounded by public lands. All hunting and trapping are exclusive rights of the riparian owner.
