Ok guys its been awhile since I have been on. And when I come back I got bad news on opening day of bird season my GSP Timber was killed. He ran in to a brush pile and jabed a stick in to his lungs he died 12mins later. Timber was for sure a Nice dog and my best friend. he is the #1 NSTRA dog in mich at this point looks like he will be able to hold that for the rest of the year.

the worst part is you can keep your dogs out of the road and other harm but brush is a thing that will always be in a hunting dogs life.

well glad to be back and happy hunting to all

Timbergsp so sorry to hear this. This happen much more than people think with hard charging dog. I'm lucky my oldest setter did the same thing but the stick stayed on the out side of his rib cage he only ended up with 35 stickes to sew him up. Wasn't your dog out of Rocket?

Yeah Worm, I sure never thought of this before. I can see it just in the backyard with my lab going all out chasing a football or basketball. He does the same thing charging through the woods chasing grouse or rabbits, and were not even hunting. Scary thought.

Yes, he was the only field trial trained son out of rocket and for sure was taken in his daddys foot steps. and seeing how rocket is not able to have off spring no more that made timber worth that much more but scott townsend (rockets owner) has very nice if not the best GSPs and I got one of his dogs here I am training and another pup. that is a half brother to timber that looks real nice.

just remember guys enjoy them while they last the best dogs can be gone in a blink of a eye

Timber sorry to hear of this.

Fear of this same thing is one reason my Lab does not go afield without her puncture resistant neoprene vest on.

I make her wear it even for forest runs. It has three good sized spots where without it on she would have skewered herself on a snag or stick.

Especially if you are waterfowling beaver areas it is best to use one.

I am already planning on one for this little ole beagle too for when she gets big enough to fit into one even if I have to buy one and restitch it myself after trimming.

Timber,
I share your grief, having lost our Aussie Sheperd on Nov. 29th due to his being hit by a car. Your dog's energy and memory will live on forever.

timber , very sorry for your loss. i know my gsp is like my child and i dread the day i have to let him go.
as a pup i had to pull him out from some old re-bar that someone had dumped in a field. a few asprin, some bandages and a couple days rest and he was ready to go. but he was still lucky.

there is no better joy then to hunt over a good german shorthaired pointer.

I feel for you and thank you for bringing this type of risk to my attention. As a relatively new bird hunter I had not recognized this as a potential risk. The neoprene vest sounds like the best solution.

Again, sorry to hear the bad news.

Man, thats just the worst. Why does something like this always seems to happen to the good ones??

Hope you find another one like yr Timber.

PS Your are right about that, every time you cut a dog loose, something crazy and bad could happen. But you sure hope Lady Luck is one your side!

A friend gave us this when we lost our last dog to cancer.

A Dog's Prayer
Treat me kindly, my beloved master,
for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness
than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick,
for though I should lick your hand between the blows,
your patience and understanding will more quickly
teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often,
for your voice is the world's sweetest music,
as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls on my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside...
for I am now a domesticated animal,
no longer used to bitter elements...
and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth...
for you are my god, and I am your devoted worshipper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water,
for although I should not reproach you were it were dry.
I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.
Feed me clean food, that I may stay well,
to romp and play and do your bidding to walk by your side,
and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.

And, my beloved master,
should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you.
Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful bounty of eternal rest...
and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew,
my fate was ever safest in your hands.

Remember me not with tearful eyes...
but instead with an abounding heart.
Should you choose to fill my bed, feel no guilt,
you have not betrayed me.
Love another as you always loved me...
and they too will love you as I always have.
