Not the best picture but the growth appears to be in the upper shoulder area. An abnormality in that area immediately screams "past hunting injury" to me.

Possibly an old wound from a gun shot or arrow that got infected or something.

Last year a guy shot a buck that was limping badly. When I skinned it there was a very hard, very large lump present. Started cutting at the lump and found an old broadhead burried in the middle of the lump. The bone was completely broken in two and the deers body had basiclly made a calcified cacoon (sp) around the wound and broadhead.

Might be impacted food caused by worms. I saw this deer last spring in northern mich. and was told it my be that.
