Controversial Detroit Metroparks deer culls showing real progress
With fewer whitetails, plants are growing
Once-ravaged vegetation is returning, white-tailed deer numbers are down and the controversy that raged five years ago when deer-killing began at southeast Michigan Metroparks has ebbed to an uneasy murmur.
And this winter, five years after hunters and sharpshooters began thinning the underweight, overpopulated animals, the deer kills continue at seven of the parks. The goal: Densities of between 20 and 25 deer per square mile.
