herring are what old timers would target. the smelt came and they claim the smelt are what wiped out the herring. probably got a run happening with this north wind should line things up nicely for long weekend.
NOooo,dont take food from the salmon.🤣I was pretty mesmerized by the whole scene. I couldn't help but think "why couldn't you dip for these like you do smelt?". I also thought about what they taste like. They're a herring I think, so can't be that bad.
The biggest appeal to Smelt, is that we can fry and eat them, bones-and-all. Go ahead and try that with Alewives. Or Herring. Or shad. Or Cisco. Or Gobies. We hunted N. Manitou for four years during those US Park Service "mercy hunts". Surprisingly, the venison did not taste fishy.We would fish North Manitou Island back during the die-offs and watch the deer browsing dead ales on the beach....mmmm, bet that was some tasty venison....
