My cousin used Dog Training for Dummies and was happy with their explanations and methods.
Might think about finding a local group obedience class, I did that many years ago with my first dog and it gave me some decent hands on experience with a trainer. They usually aren't real pricey, and then you have a good basis to build on for more advanced training. Many times your vet or local rescue can point you in the right direction for training help as well.
What kind of dogs are they? If they are hunting breed mixes perhaps you can get them involved in the field????
Good Luck!!
