Ice has formed from 2 to 5" out from shore. It is about an inch thick at the shore line. How do I trap beaver in these conditions? With the snow on the ground for the past few days I thought I would have seen some tracks in the snow along shore. Why haven't I? Do they stay in the water all the time?

If the temperature gets back up in the 40's the beaver might come out on shore to cut some food, but if ice is forming then they are just as inclined to stay at home.

You are probably dealing with a couple wise old beaver, that are not likely to cut you any slack! If they are feeding on shore, they are traveling a long ways from their bank lodge to do it.

Try checking out some more distance locations for sign. But if this is just a very small land locked pond, you will probably have to wait until it totally freezes over to make some under ice bait sets.
