Not many public areas for fishing down that way. Sometimes it's possible to get on to some golf course ponds, but it's rare. Most of the time you have to know someone.

The Detroit River has some backwaters that are 5 star bass fisheries. Try the water on the S Side of Grosse Isle Airport, locally referred to as “Airport Bay”. Tremendous bass fishery when the water hits about 55F. Pick a low wind day, preferably “off-shore”, and launch at Lake Erie Metro Park; stay in the channel going East, and you will see it off to the left as you cross the lower end of the Trenton Channel.

Good luck.

Jay

PS. Most folks are so tied up with walleye fishing that they don’t take the opportunity to chase these bass; keep in mind that the bays and backwaters will warm up quicker than the open river, so if the DR is hitting mid forties, the Airport Bay would be warmer.

Yeppers, some really nice bass in the river. Caught a 22 inch smallie trolling minnowbaits for pike and 'eyes on a drop-off last year. Big largemouths will be on the flats when it warms up a bit. One can usually tell by the look of the spots and structure.
