Not many public areas for fishing down that way. Sometimes it's possible to get on to some golf course ponds, but it's rare. Most of the time you have to know someone.

If I was looking to go smallmouth fishing down river I'd say belleville and ford lakes and the Huron in between them be your best bet imo

Walk around in huroc park. No tellin what u can catch there..I can think of about seven species. Just remember what is and isn’t in season as it’s patrolled both by DNR and the flat rock po po. They will check you occasionally

huroc park in flat rock would be good. I also fish the Huron river in Willow and Lower Huron metroparks in the summer. Great smallmouth action. They’re smaller but are fun to catch

The Detroit River has some backwaters that are 5 star bass fisheries. Try the water on the S Side of Grosse Isle Airport, locally referred to as “Airport Bay”. Tremendous bass fishery when the water hits about 55F. Pick a low wind day, preferably “off-shore”, and launch at Lake Erie Metro Park; stay in the channel going East, and you will see it off to the left as you cross the lower end of the Trenton Channel.

Good luck.

Jay

PS. Most folks are so tied up with walleye fishing that they don’t take the opportunity to chase these bass; keep in mind that the bays and backwaters will warm up quicker than the open river, so if the DR is hitting mid forties, the Airport Bay would be warmer.

Yeppers, some really nice bass in the river. Caught a 22 inch smallie trolling minnowbaits for pike and 'eyes on a drop-off last year. Big largemouths will be on the flats when it warms up a bit. One can usually tell by the look of the spots and structure.
