Has anyone tried these "automatic hooksetting" gizmos? They kinda look like a rodholder and tip-up had a lovechild.

yeah they work for some things. Its a tool that has pros and cons. If your walleye fishing or pike fishing or perch fishing where it isn't a dink fest and you want to stay camped, then its cool. I don't use mine on LSC, too much hassle.

one other note is that the hookset is really violent with the medium or above rod they sell. I had better luck once I switched it out for a medium lite or lite rod. Even for walleye and pike.

I use the jaw jacker and I love it. It has not missed a fish yet. I always put a bigger minnow on it to try and sort out the little ones.

Great for trout or a dead stick for walleye or pike.

I used mine on LSC and 2nd the bigger minnow. Normally though I just use it as a "tip-up" for pike on inland lakes when I am crappie fishing. Have managed quite a few Crappie on it "accidentally".

Made a couple to fish for trout. Haven’t been up to try them yet but lots of guys used them last year with good success. Sold me on the idea.

you can make one out of an old metal coathanger and a rod holder. the coathanger goes into the first eyelet. just takes some bending and tinkering with the tension to get it right. The guy I ice fish with the most uses home made ones.
