Anyone go to or hear anything about the Iowa gun season?

I have a friend in WI who hunts Iowa every year. His experience, including this seasnon, has been excellent. He's been harping on me to join him out there. One of these years I'll have to take him up on it.

A friend from Clare visiting at the cabin during muzzleloader season told me that he was with a friend who harvested a 170 class Iowa buck in the archery season and another friend of his just returned with a 180 class buck taken in the Iowa gun season. Another visitor (a friend of my hunting partner's son) related how he and two other MSU students from the Clare area killed two 130 class bucks during a 3-day gun hunt following the semester break. He told how they saw 15-20 nice bucks a day and how he missed a monster. His muzzleloader misfired twice -- yes the deer gave him time to recap and shoot a second time. They hunted both private (no accesss problems) and public lands and this was their first time hunting Iowa deer. Their only gripe was the $300 non-resident license. I also heard that John Eberhardt of Clare took a Booner in Iowa with the bow this year.

I saw pictures of a 170 class buck that was shot durning shotgun season. I'll bet it was the 180 class that you heard about since the guy that shot it was from Clare and it sounds like you hunt at Twodogs with Seibts. How did you guys do this season?

Yo Mark, I have a brother that's a heck of a shot and is interested in going to Iowa. Don't know why tho. He killed a HUGE buck this year in SW Michigan and shouldn't be fool'n' with those small bucks in Iowa lol.

I talked to John Eberhart from Clare Co. last night. He litterally wrote the book on trophy deer hunting. He hunted Iowa this year and took a 180 inch buck, his largest ever. He's an official scorer, so if he says it's a 180, it's a genuine 180.

180" ? Holy crap! TS, did he say what part of the state he hit? NE or SE?

I don't recall ever talking to anyone that went deer hunting in Iowa that didn't come back impressed.

He didn't say. He hunts Iowa about every other year and just knocks on doors when he gets there for places to hunt. The story of that 180 kill was amazing and I don't want to ruin the story as he is writing it for Bowhunting magazine.

I was supposed to be there in dec, next year is already a done deal. I wanted to wait until my son was ready and buying a new house put the stops to that hunt.
