.450 Bushmaster reloading questions

Take it easy on this ol'muzzleloader guy here...........

I haven't loaded for a centerfire in decades, so before I start reloading for this .450 I should probably ask for some advice/recommendations.
I have a new set of Hornady dies, primers, bullets and just picked up 4# of Lil Gun, ($110).

According to the directions in the die set, I've set the size die spindle 3/16", have the die set properly in the press and tightened the lock ring. I believe I've conquered step 1 to far. Here's where the questions start. With this 4 die set, one of these must expand the mouth of the case to accept the bullet. This appears that it may be a "trial and error" setup? Is there a standard that is used, as far as how far it should the case mouth be expanded to load the bullet easy?

Now I have two (2) dies left, one which I know is the seating die, which has the in-line floating sleeve. My assumption is, that its not that much different than most seating dies, in that you adjust the seating depth by the adjustment on the top? How far does this die with the sliding in-line sleeve get screwed into the press? Do I screw it down until the inline slider touches the shell holder or, is that to far? My OAFL is also set using this die? Never used anything like this so I'm stumped on how far to seat the die in the press and need a little instruction on this.

The 4th die is evidently the crimping die. I'll need a lot of help with this one........

Thanks in advance. This CF stuff is all new again........

Hornady instructions are not good for this die set. Think of the 450 as something similar to a giant 45 acp. The cartridge headspaces on the case mouth.

When using the expander die expand the case very little. The 450 needs a heavy bullet pull. Over expanding will cause loss of neck tension.

The seating die if set to deep will start a roll crimp on the case mouth. Not wanted. I set mine by placing a trimmed to length case in the press. Raise the ram to the top then screw the die down to touch the case then back off a couple of turns and lock it down.

The set includes a taper crimp die. This is the one to use. A proper taper crimp should be (when measured at the case mouth) close to .473-.474.

Lots of info here

Ok, very little expansion, got that part. I take it by backing off the seating die a couple turns, its preventing the roll crimp. I use the bullet seating screw to adjust for OAFL? Then use the taper crimp die instead, to tighten the bullet in the case. It sounds like this may take a little work getting it right. So with an unloaded (no propellant or bullet) case ONLY, you set that die to crimp the case at .473-.474, which should hold the bullet sufficiently?

I have been doing some digging and found this for what its worth.already contacted Barnes and here's what they have to say:

Hello,

Our .451 muzzleloader bullets work great in the 450 Bushmaster. We have had customers experiment with great results. The only bad thing is that we don’t yet have any load data. We are planning on shooting some, but it could be 6 months or more before we can squeeze it in. We will get it done as soon as we can. Thank you for your patronage.

I seen a guy test the .450 Bushmaster bullet with a muzzleloader at 2,000fps. It was shot through a piece of carpet glued to a piece of thin plywood, then into water jugs. You could put the bullet right back in the rifle and shoot it again. Zero expansion at 2,000fps ?

The tip probably plugged up. That would cause it to act like a FMJ and not expand. I've had it happen with a 44 mag shooting through plywood and into sand. Have a pic of 2 identical projectiles (somewhere), one expanded beautifully, the other not at all and has splinters sticking out of the hollow cavity.

It's actually a pretty common problem with HP projectiles. Enough so that Hornady came out with their "Critical Defense" product line.

I'm guessing Jeff Quinn ran close to 50 grains of H110. On the article it shows the loaded round, so you can approximate OAL. Probably over 2.400".
In my loads with the 250 T-EZ, I use Lil' Gun. I didn't seat mine as long as his, but they do like a bit of a jump for accuracy anyhow.
Zero issues with copper fouling. 2425 FPS as measured by a Chrony out of a 16" Ruger.

2.325"
The new TTSX are just slightly longer to keep the mouth of the case out of the groove.
Tried both bullets and there really is no advantage of the new TTSX over the muzzleloader T-EZ or Remington Accutip branded version of the same
Thanks Ken! I put some down range earlier tonight. 2.26 OAL and was getting some good results with 39.5 and 40 grains of lil gun. I’m shooting a Ruger American Ranch with a Hybrid 46 Suppressor. Groups were just under an inch. Like you I didn’t experience any fouling issues.

That's the good thing about the 450- generally doesn't take too much work to get good accuracy with most any load/bullet.
350 L is another story.
350 is just as easy if you have years of 357 Maximum experience and kept notes...lol
