Just wondering if anyone had any experience with hand loading .45-70 specifically for black bear? 2 years ago I took a bear with the 325 gn FTX loaded to about 2050 fps (neck shot) and it was like flipping a light switch... Very effective. The round shoots well too, I can make 3 shot clover shaped groups at 50 yards fairly easily. The only issue I had with the round was with what was recovered from the bear. There was pieces of jacket everywhere. It seemed to of exploded on impact(or at least the jacket did) and there was no evidence that it hit any bone. I am thinking of changing over to hornady's 350 gn rn for this years hunt. My question is has anyone used it for hunting? What was your velocity and how did it perform? I been testing some loads fueled by IMR 4198 with federal 210 primers out of my marlin at 1500, 1700, and just shy of 1900 fps and they all shoot very well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
