Every now and then there is a story and photo of a non-standard looking whitetail being taken. Shown below is a picture of a mature doe full of milk with a single antler (over 3" long) still in velvet on her head that was shot during the early private land antlerless deer season in September a...

I did some scouting in early April and found a new trail with a good rub line and a large active scrape. I set up a trailcam about 20 yards from the scrape on April 27. Pulled it yesterday. A lot of interesting pics with at least 8 decent bucks. These three pics are the best bucks from the last...

I know this varies by property, but how close do you think that bucks bed to one another when they are in their summer bachelor groups? And how about after they break apart in late summer/early fall? We are having portions of our 80 acres timbered, so I will planting some spruce in random groups...

One of my stands has some great bucks on camera, all morning photos, between 8 -9am. At this spot I don't have photos of these bucks during evening hours. Should I still focus on this stand for evening hunts, or scout another stand for evenings? Thanks in advanced for any opinions, and happy...

Here's a pic of my Crimson clover food plot. This is the fourth year it has been reseeding itself. All I do is put on some 5/24/24 each year after brushhogging. Add water and Walaa! Doesn't get much easier. No till works great on this sandy soil.

Not a ton of food in this area - lots of nibbling on brows and foraging the bushes. Hoping these bucks grow to at least meet our APRs and the does put on more weight before fall. Plenty of time! One bachelor group of 3. I think these fellas are at least 2-3 years old. Couple of the does...

Here in Michigan November 15th is a date that every hunter knows. It is one of the first days I look at when opening a new calendar and is a day that evokes fond memories for many of this state's hunters. It is the opening day of Michigan's Firearm Deer Season and is one of my favorite days of...

The 2000 bow season opened as it usually did for me, with our annual trip to Michigan's upper peninsula. Our bow camp consists of nearly 20 people and is always a good time regardless of how the hunting goes. The weather always seems to cooperate and the hunting is usually pretty good. The 2000...

If you asked most hunters when they felt as though they had the best chance of harvesting a buck many would choose the pre-rut and rut phases of the season, and with good reason. We all know that at any moment a hot doe can pass through, stir up the woods and bring the bucks out of hiding. The...

All the waiting was over and a moment 9 months in the making had finally arrived. As sunlight began to illuminate the woods around me the opening day of Michigan's 2013 season slowly came to life. Right at first light I spotted a small buck on the northern edge of the food plot I was sitting...

There is so much discussion concerning exactly when to be in the woods...WHEN is the pre-rut, rut, etc. For me personally, I only hunt cold fronts; meaning that I completely disregard the moon as well as avoid any certain calendar day of the month...for example, "I always have to be in the woods...

Ok, cold front hunting is certainly a moving target the further in advance that you study the forecast, but the same concepts still apply! Each and every hunting season there are only a handful of days to be in the whitetail woods and my bet is on those days that relate to the October and...

If you ask most hunters when they see their biggest bucks or when they see the most bucks most will probably say November. If you were to ask me that same question you may be a bit surprised when I chose July or August as my best months. While I don't disagree with the idea that November is a...

Sometimes great expectations can lead to great disappointments and over the years I've learned the hard way that going into a hunting season with great expectations can quickly put you in the wrong frame of mind. This year I'm learning that going into the summer off season with lofty...
