Recently I had the chance to try out a FoodSaver GameSaver Silver vacuum packaging system. The FoodSaver system is designed to remove air and extend freshness up to five times longer than conventional storage methods. Surely, if you put in all the time pursuing and harvesting your game, you’ll want to preserve it as long as possible.
The FoodSaver GameSaver seals and vacuums many different types of packages. FoodSaver makes continuous rolls of material that can be cut into custom shapes, or pre-cut bags. Also, the Silver model comes with an attachment that allows for the air to be removed from FoodSaver containers and even wine bottle caps.
I put the FoodSaver Silver through the paces on some venison from this fall which I had only packaged in zip lock bags. Anyone who uses zip lock bags knows how hard it is to first remove all the air from the bag and then to get a good seal on it. First I packaged a bulky pack of steaks. No problem. Next I sealed some deer sticks. These are always hard to keep fresh due to the irregular shapes. Again no problem… a nice neat package that I’m sure will remain fresh for much longer. The GameSaver is easy to use with two simple buttons to either seal the edge of the bag or to both vacuum and seal. The LED indicators next to the buttons give you a status on the vacuum and sealing process. It has an easily cleanable tray to catch any juices that might get vacuumed along with the air.
There are lots of vacuum packers on the market today. What really sets this one apart for the sportsman is its ability to do all of this on a 12 volt power supply out in the field. While the manufacturer recommends that this be done while the vehicle is running, I tested this out on a stand alone jump starter with no ill effects to the battery. What a great idea! Field dress your fish and game and then vacuum pack it right in the field before you put it in the cooler. No more freezing fish in packs of hard to thaw ice!
