November is a full month for hunters in Michigan. In addition to the upcoming start of firearm season, there are plenty of other events of which they can partake. An example of this is the Novembeard campaign which is rolling out to focus on the health of hunters by offering free health screenings.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is partnering with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Jay’s Sporting Goods, and Otsego Memorial Hospital to call attention to men’s health this November. Seeing that men spend about three minutes a day shaving each year, which tallies up to more than 18 hours annually, their stance is that there are some other activities men should be partaking in as well. Since No Shave November means saving three minutes daily for 30 days, they suggest that 90 minutes be put to good use by taking a physical, something 55% of men neglect to have on a routine basis.
To combat the tendency for us to neglect our routine healthcare, there will be an event held in Gaylord on November 10th. At this time, various health screenings will be offered at what is being billed as a healthy hunter event. Since health is important to hunters and no one wants to find themselves having an emergency in the woods, participating in Novembeard is a good way to find out if you have any health issues arising and how to attend to them before you set out after a buck this firearm season.
Staff from Otsego Memorial Hospital along with support from Blue Cross Blue Shield will be on hand for these free health screenings at Jay’s Sporting Goods in Gaylord. They will be offering free blood pressure checks as well as free cholesterol screenings and body composition checks. This will all be done on a first-come, first-served basis on Tuesday, November 10th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The location will be at Jay’s Sporting Goods located at 1151 S Otsego Avenue in Gaylord, Michigan, in the meeting room.
While you’re there to take advantage of free health screenings, there will be plenty of shopping incentives to be had. Free blaze orange Jay’s hats will be given to those who participate and a drawing will be held amongst participants for a velocity crossbow. Continued good health, hunting swag, and a possible prize are pretty hard to beat, so attending is very much worthwhile.
Another portion of the Novembeard fun includes a best beard in the DNR competition. Votes are being collected to determine who the owner of the best beard is with the winner being announced at the Detroit Pistons versus Milwaukee Bucks game on December 4th. The losing beard will have to be shaved at that time, but the real winner is the voters who are eligible to win all kinds of goodies just for voting. All votes must be cast by November 30th, but voters can win prizes such as $50 gift cards to Jay’s Sporting Goods, tickets to Maryland at MSU on November 14th, and tickets to Bucks at Pistons on December 4th.
With the benefit of continued good health along with the possibility of some awesome prizes, there really is no reason not to participate in the month of Novembeard events. Keeping yourself healthy and giving your family the peace of mind that comes with knowing you are at your peak physical condition while spending long days in the woods is priceless, but in this case also free. Head on up to Jay’s and give it a go!
