One of my favorite birds. I spend a fair amount feeding them throughout the winter.
Who you calling pec...oh nevermind lol
I'll see if I can dig up video I took of one last year..was able to get within 5 feet of him as he pecked at bottom of tree. Have had a few run ins with these guys over last few years..as cool as they are, and fun to listen to...they will do some damage.
Great bird. First sighting for me was during the 2014 during deer season.
They sure are fun to watch.
My son and I were on our little cow path of a road last year and we spotted one at base of a tree..we sat in car five feet from tree and he just worked around the tree and never went more then a few feet up..we watched and filmed off and on for 15 minutes..at that point UPS came down road and we had to pull over so he could get through the one lane we have.
Had another fly over my car and stay a few feet above my windshield and lead me more or less for about half a mile before he made a turn to the South.
Cool birds for sure.
My pecker has a red head .
ps here he is .
Mines bigger than yours!
I like seeing them but man can they damage a tree. We actually stopped putting out a feeder because of it.

Just a bunch of guys showing off their peckers.
I prefer hooters over pictures of your peckers.
