Correct! It is not just the river that is lagging behind this year a bit, it is the numbers of fish as a whole that have not reentered the inner-bay in large numbers yet. Who knows why, could be multiple reasons affecting the slow return of the fish. It is hard to predict mother natures creatures. We like to think we can, but they have there own creature habits that drive there movements. Eye will go out on a limb and predict they will be here shortly, and everyone will be happy. :D :fish::D

Have you noticed the white egrets and storks around the rivers? They are usually plentiful at this time also after the minnows. Usually you can see sea gulls diving into the rivers when a school is around. A good place to look for hungry walleyes also.

Yes I have noticed both Things, the Seagulls where checking out my shallow running crank baits. The signs of life are a good thing, the river is healthy...just not that clear. Every year is different on the rivers....some good some bad.Hope to get up there on a weekend soon.

I went saturday night for a couple hours. I had a couple hits but it was still nice to get out. Shad are definitely loaded, the water looked like it was boiling with all of them surfacing.

I wish I could say I caught them all in Thunder Bay, but still waiting for the first one I'm afraid. LOL

I actually debated making a thread on thunder bay but decided against it so I'll make a one post wonder here.

I was there this weekend in the 3 hours I had to fish, I think that is a very under rated fishery based on those three hours. I bet that bay is LOADED with small mouth. Caught 2 trolling 6" cranks around rock piles. Finally broke the walleye curse as well. .21" healthy dark fish

If I had more time I would have tied on some drop shot rigs and targeted the smallmouth. And with some planning ahead I would have brought minnows to make life easy

    I was trolling for steelhead

Heard they were in there thick but didn't know depth lures or location so I just winged it.

Well, it wasn’t the day I hoped for but it still felt great to be out on the river. Caught a bunch of little walleye and some sheephead. Snagged a big carp in the tail and then switched gears for some fall crappie. Finally started to dial the crappie in and then a freighter went through and turned the river to chocolate milk. Called it a day after that. I got to fish in rain, sleet and snow today. I’m still thawing out.

Those are my favorite fish pan fried to a golden crisp on the outside and tender and flaky on the inside. Now I'm making myself hungry...smh
